This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hello, can anyone tell me if it is possible to allow files\folders to be excluded from a VCB type backup, I have added the selection in through the text based selection, which is seems to have excepted but those files are still being backed up.  Unlike traditional backups I can only browse to the vmdk level so I am unable to untick the folders I require via GUI.

Using backup exec 12.5.

It is not possible to exclude the files and folders from the GRT of the Virtual Machines that you backup. During selection, you will only see the vmdk files, only after th GRT backup completes, you will be able to view the Files and folders for the Virtual Machines.

Thanks Jaydeep.  The reason why I ask is that we have lots of files in the C:\Users directory of a machine which we backup via VCB complaining they dont suppose GRT (exceptions).  If I cant exclude them is there a way around this issue whilst still backing up usign VCB?

i am not sure if there is a work around to this as such. However, see if this helps in explaining what might be happening.
