I'm running SBS 2003 and I have upgraded from 11D
My problem is I'm getting the following skipped files

File is in use : C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat<BR>File is in use : C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat.LOG<BR>File is in use : C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\NTUSER.DAT<BR>File is in use : C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\ntuser.dat.LOG<BR>File is in use : C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat<BR>File is in use : C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat.LOG<BR>File is in use : C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\NTUSER.DAT<BR>File is in use : C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\ntuser.dat.LOG<BR>File is in use : C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat<BR>File is in use : C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat.LOG<BR>File is in use : C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\NTUSER.DAT<BR>File is in use : C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\ntuser.dat.LOG

I was not getting these files skipped when I was using 11D and I don't know of anything else that would be causing this.

Upon first glance it looks like AOFO (Advanced Open File Option) either isn't being used or isn't installed on the resource you are backing up.  I say this because of the "file in use" message.  When you upgraded to v12, did you push the v12 agent out to all of your resources?  If so, check your backup job to insure that AOFO is enabled in the job properties.

BEWS is designed to skip certain kind of files like temp files, database files, database log files etc and will not back them up.
That is the reason why there is an agent to backup databases as logical structures and not as files since the files will be in use by the database application itself and will not be allowed to be backed up
You will not be able to backup these types of files even with the AOFO license
In BEWS you do not need to purchase a seperate license for AOFO and it comes bundled with the REMOTE AGENT license

So are you suggesting that since these files can't be backed up that these files should be removed from the backup job(s) so that the errors are not being reported?

Thanks,

Dave

Same problem here..
I did use the open file option, but again same errors.

As you posted it isn't possible to backup those files...
But I think they are needed to make a disaster recovery or am I wrong...

Would love to hear the answer.

Does Symantec have a recommendation on these files being skipped? Seems like a few people want to know if they can/need to be backed up.

Symantec?

I've just upgraded from 11d to 12 and didn't immediately get around to installing the new agent on all my servers. Those servers that have the new agent installed report these files as skipped whilst the 11d agents don't, so given that I haven't made any changes to my jobs, what's changed between the two versions?

Same files being skipped here, version 12.

Can a Symantec moderator please address the question?

NTUSER.DAT in the LocalService profile seems like it would be a necessary file component to be backed up.

Now I have 11d and up until I did an update a while back have had no issues.  I have always ran into the issue with "temp" files but, at least with those it would skip the file and "complete with exceptions".
Now, I have issues with my Full backup not completing because of "Files in use" and it causing the backup to run for hours and in some cases requesting another tape (as I do not run a tape lib).  The files in question at this point are Symantec End Point Solution files.  I can only believe that there is an issue on my part as I would not believe that there would be a product put out that did not work with another symantec product.  If any one has figured out this issue I would appreciate some assistance.  Thanks to all.
