    Is it possible to create a filter based on AD Group membership within AD?

    to import Computer resources (Resource Type: Computer, Source: Security Groups, select "Create organizational unit filters") from AD. You need to specify which Domain Security Groups to Import and it will create filters for each one under Filters > Notification Server Filters > Directory Filters > [Domain name] > Security Groups.
