Hello folks,

Maybe someone has come across this problem before - I searched but could not find a similar problem

From BE log:

Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xa0008488 - Access is denied.

Final error category: Security Errors

(and then there are 100's of errors for everyones mail boxes - just Calanders and Contacts though?!?)

e.g.

Access denied to file Joe Bloggs Top of Information Store Calendar jane doe's birthday 18:00.

Access denied to file Joe Bloggs Top of Information Store Contacts jane doe

Then after 100's of the above it moves onto 100's of errors like those below.

The item \\LAN-SERVER\Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes\Joe Bloggs Top of Information Store Calendar jane doe's birthday 18:00 in use - skipped.

The item \\LAN-SERVER\Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes\Joe Bloggs Top of Information Store Contacts jane doe in use - skipped.

Please help :)

Many thanks

I should add - it is running as the domain administrator. Very strange problem I think...

In order to Backup Exchange mailboxes successfully please ensure that following guidelines are met:-
1.) Anti-virus software accessing the Information Store at the same time as the backup, i.e. using the same Messaging API as Backup Exec does.(It is then recommended to stop Anti-virus software services when backing up the mailboxes).
2.) Multiple levels of embedded mail messages (a message attached to a message attached to a message etc.)(remove message)
3.) Automated system messages (undeliverable, over size limit etc.)(remove message).
4.) The message / attachment is really corrupt (can't open, view or execute)(remove message).
5.) Virus infected Information store (clean for virus).
6.) Very long subject lines (remove message).
7.) Very long attachment names (remove message).
8.) Very large attachments (might give out of resource like errors)(remove message).
Check the name of the mailbox (which gives error "is a corrupt file") in job log and download all the mails of that mailbox to personal folder file (.pst)

The above errors inform that there are few mails in the mailbox which are undelivered and are returned back to the mailbox. Kindly delete such mail messages and then carry out the backup job operation.
In addition to above steps please refer to following technote as well.
Title:- Backup of Exchange mailboxes fails with final error code: "a000feab HEX Final error description: Corrupt data encountered."

We hope this helps. Let us know if you have upgraded to Backup Exec v9.1 If you have done so, you may also apply Hotfix 33

9.1.4691 Hotfix 33 - Exchange Agent (Multiple mailbox related issues) - *Requires VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 revision 4691 Service Pack 1 http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/269749.htm

We hope this helps. Let us know if the problem still exists and revert back with the error message.

Hello thanks for your advice but the problem is that no Calander and contacts information can be backed up- mail boxes etc back up fine. It is really strange. Is there anything that would cause "access denied" to only the calander and contact information?

Many thanks.

Use Delegate control wizard and provide FULL Exchange admin rights to the Backup exec user.

Hope this helps.

Hello.

It is being run as the administrator who is part of the domain administrators - this user already has fully access. Is this OK?

Best regards.

Being a domain administrator does not give full rights to Exchange, you need to fgive those rights specifically to the user. In Exchange System Manager, right click on the organization and select Delegate Control. Follow the wizard.

Thanks for you help, but the administrator has full exchange rights already.

I went through everyones account in the selections and removed contacts and calander from the top of information store for each individual. The 100's of errors are gone, now I get one error -

"Job completion status: Canceled by service shutdown

The network connection to the Backup Exec Remote Agent has been lost. Please check for network errors.
A timeout occurred waiting for completion of media server data processing"

Hmmm, I seem to be having a nightmare with this software...

Thanks for your help. Maybe the original problem and this problem are related?

Hi,

In regards to your query we suggest you to first reboot the server once.(If exchange server is remote then reboot it also)

After rebooting the server try backing up Exchange mailboxes with calenders and contacts present in their mailboxes.Observe the results.

If the error persists then perform a database repair of the backup exec.

Hope this helps.
