Find logs to tell if SEP 12.1.5 is pulling from web server

  • 1.  Find logs to tell if SEP 12.1.5 is pulling from web server

    Posted Apr 23, 2015 07:03 PM

I am tapped, I can't find anything in the logs, reports, or monitor. I have setup Auto-upgrade to groups (Upgrade from 12.1.1 to 12.1.5) to pull from a webserver, where is have the invididual .exe files for each group held. When I check the client details is says "Download Successfull file size 0" but the size 725mb. Is there a way to tell if it is working properly?

If you enable sylink debugging on a client it show the full details in the sylink.log file. But you need to have this enabled prior to the client downloading the exe.

Is there a way to do that without editing the registry?

    Hi,

Thank you for posting in Symantec community.

    It's a known issue with SEP 12.1 RU5 version.

Ensure that both the web server and folder in the file structure are configured such so that no login is required to download the setup.exe file, and anonymous users can access and download the file.

Check this article for more details: Unable to upgrade to Release Update 5 (RU 5) from a client package that's on a hosted URL via the Auto-Upgrade proces

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH122776

You can check other several methods as well to upgrade Symantec client software.

I have confirmed and tested that user's can access the setup.exe without creds but I am not seeing the clients update in the time I have setup, I should have more of an increse of updated clients than I do if it was working correctly.

Download randomization work with an Auto-Upgrade in SEP:

    Here are the concept details:

    Upgrade Schedule:

    • If selected, this option will limit the packages to a specific time range during the day (i.e. only deploy from midnight to 8am)

    Distribute updates over:

    • How long to spread out the distribution. If set to '0' updates start right away (or during the next Upgrade Schedule if specified)

    How it works:

    • You have configured your distribution options, and completed the Upgrade Groups Wizard. As clients check in the SEPM, they will be notified that there is a new update to download and install.
The SEPM will either tell the client to download the package immediately, or if a schedule/timeline is specified the SEPM will give the client the parameters to download the package (i.e. sometime over the next 4 days between midnight and 8am) and the client picks a random time in that range. There is no visibility from the SEPM to see when a specific client is scheduled to start it's download. If a client is offline when the random window occured, the client will pick a new random time.

So do this, cross your fingers, and best of luck? There is no way to monitor the roll out?

Overall, doing it this way, it's going to be cumbersome to monitor. I'm sure your web server logs will show access times and the like. The SEPM will keep some record of it, if you check the Clients page and open up the properties of a client, you should see commnets along the line of SEP has been upgraded, needs to be restarted...etc.

To me, because you're doing this upgrade with the web server, I don't see the SEPM having much to do here other than report on whether or not upgrade was successful.

At the SEPM console won't be able to monitor the auto upgrade process.

However, make sure you have added new MIME file type in the properties of the proper virtual directory:

    1. Go to the proper website, right click the virtual directory where the setup.exe file is listed and select Properties

    2. Go to HTTP Headers tab and on the bottom under MIME Map click on File Types

    3. Click on New Type button and add new file type:

    Associated extension: EXE

    Content type (MIME): EXE file

    C. Apply the Install Package to a Group:
    1. In the SEPM, go to the Clients tab.
    2. Select the group you want to upgrade.
    3. Select the Install Packages tab.
    4. Under Tasks, select Add Client Install Package.
    5. Under Download Source, select "Download the client package from the following URL (http or https)"
    6. Enter the URL to the setup.exe file.
    (Example: http://IP_address/SEP_Install/setup.exe)
    7. Click OK to save the settings to the group.

Refer this article:  How to upgrade a client from a non-manager server using the "Download the client package from the following URL (http or https)" option.

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH106181

If it still failed need to check Sylink.log at client machine.
