We have a problem when using the "Find Unmanaged Computers" function in SEPM. (We are using version 11, MR4 MP2)

I get a lot of computers both under "Unmanaged Computers" and "Unknown Computers" that already have SEP Client and works.

Does anyone know why we get does in the list ?

unmanaged computers are those computers, which can be  pinged and the authentication passes ( credential passes)

unknown computers are those computers which does not pass the authentication test.

These can be routers/switches/printers and non-windows systems.

let me know if you have any questions..

There has been a lot of confusion between Unknown and Unmanaged computers in Find Unmanaged computers.

After entering the login credentials and domain/workgroup name when you hit search.
It starts scanning your network using those credentials.
On the computers on which these credentials does not work this tool Classifies it to be Unknown Computers thats the reason you will also see your routers, switches, printers and other networking devices in Unknown Computers.

On the computers on which these credential works then this tool checks if that compters is registered with this SEPM console,If it finds its entry in the sepm console it will not list it otherwise it will show up as Unamanaged computer that is either that computer has SEP but its Unmanaged or it does not have sep at all.

I would likk to add to vikram's Comments...

PC's in which SEP is installed & pointing to other Server will also show as unmanaged computer.

I've checked some of the computers that were classified as Unmanaged Computers but has Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 in the Software field. They were found in SEPM with latest definition file installed, communication OK, IP address etc. OK, Logs OK.

I ran Update Policy locally on the client to see if that could trigger something, but without success.

Is Find Unmanaged Computers using nst.exe utility, i.e. the Network Audit?

I'm just trying to figure out why the search result is so incorrect.
