After entering the login credentials and domain/workgroup name when you hit search.
It starts scanning your network using those credentials.
On the computers on which these credentials does not work this tool Classifies it to be Unknown Computers thats the reason you will also see your routers, switches, printers and other networking devices in Unknown Computers.

On the computers on which these credential works then this tool checks if that compters is registered with this SEPM console,If it finds its entry in the sepm console it will not list it otherwise it will show up as Unamanaged computer that is either that computer has SEP but its Unmanaged or it does not have sep at all.

for me its seems like ID and pass is not working. Can you export the same package from SEPM and install it manually on the client side, does that work?

--- I exported installation package from SEPM then i installed manually on the client side. This is worked.

I am thinking our client is managed now because it wasn't found  find unmanaged computers button, but it wasn't found when I hit Search Clients button too.

If you go to the client and open the SEP gui and go to Help >> Troubleshooting, does it show connected to the SEPM?

Please click the "Mark as solution" link at bottom left on the post that best answers your question. This will benefit admins looking for a solution to the same problem.

Help and Support--> Troubleshooting? then what do i need?

Check the green dot sign shown on the symantec shield in taskbar

Second

Help and Support--> Troubleshooting there it can display the client server connectivity status

which will confirm you the client is manage or not.

Eg- same as below screen
