Force PXE Boot
Created: 04 Mar 2011 | 1 comment
We have the Altiris Deployment Server v6. One feature we've used is it's ability to reboot a system into PXE boot without any end user interaction. How does it do this? We need to emulate this behavior outisde of the Deployment Tool and wanted to write a script that will perform this. Any help would be great.

Boot order
I believe the client computer needs to have the boot order set to the NIC first. When the computer tries to boot to the NIC, the PXE server checks Altiris for an active job, if there is no active job, it boots to the next boot device (usually the hard drive). I don't know that there is a way to automatically change the boot order in the BIOS (if that's what you are asking), unless the BIOS supports the settings being written from the OS.
