Frequently Asked Questions on SEP SBE 12.0
Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition 12.0 Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some FAQ's regarding migration, licensing, and product details for SEP SBE 12.0
Entitlement/Migration
Question 1: How does a customer move to SEP SBE 12.0? Will it cost the customer to move to SEP SBE 12.0?
There are various scenarios from which a customer can move to SEP SBE. They are listed below:
Scenario 1: Customer currently owns SAV or SEP and wants to move when renewal is up
If a customer currently owns SAV or SEP today and they wish to move to SEP SBE at the time their renewal is up, the cost to cross-grade to SEP SBE will be $0. The cross-grade price is equivalent to price of renewal (so if cross-grade is done at time of renewal its does not cost any additional dollars).
Scenario 2: Customer currently owns SAV or SEP and wants to move to SEP SBE ASAP
If a customer has some additional months left on SAV CE or SEP maintenance, the partner/customer can choose to fill out a license transfer worksheet. In this case Symantec will simply transfer the customer licenses from SAV/SEP to SEP SBE 12.0. There are no additional fees associated with this process. Symantec Customer service department will be equipped to help partners with the license transfer process to ensure smooth transition. This method, however, is a very manual process, and therefore is NOT RECOMMENDED.
Scenario 3: Customer owns SMP SBE 11.0 and wants to move to SPS SBE
A customer that currently owns Multitier Protection Small Business Edition today will need to cross-grade to Symantec Protection Suite Small Business Edition (SPS SBE) SPS SBE is a suite that entitles customers to SEP SBE 12. 0 and other products (listed here)
– Endpoint Security
• Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition 12.0 NEW!
• Symantec AntiVirus for Mac
– Messaging Security
• Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange
• Symantec Premium AntiSpam
– Backup and Recovery
• Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery
Desktop Edition – NEW!
There is no additional cost to cross-grade if done at time of renewal. Customers can also opt to use the License Transfer Process to move from Multitier SBE 11.0 to SPS SBE at no cost, however, this is a manual process and NOT RECOMMENDED.
Scenario 4: Customer owns SEP small business pack (5, 10, 25, 50) and wants to move to SEP SBE 12.0
A customer can simply cross grade to SEP SBE 12.0 or choose to go through the license transfer process at no additional cost as mentioned above. Again, the license transfer process is NOT recommended. Customer is recommended to cross-grade at the time of renewal.
Scenario 5: Customer owns Multi-tier Protection 11.0 licenses today and wants to move to SEP SBE 12.0
A customer that owns Multi-tier Protection 11.0 today and has SEP 11.0 deployed and wishes to move to SEP SBE 12.0 will have to transition to Symantec Protection Suite Small Business Edition (SPS SBE). SPS SBE is a suite/bundle of products which is similar to Multitier Small business edition. This will be characterized as a downgrade and can be accomplished via a License Transfer. There will be no cost to the customer, but this is not recommended. Current SMP customers should migrate to SPS EE.
Scenario 6: Customer currently owns a competitive solution (Mcafee, Trend) today and wants to move to SEP SBE 12.0.
If customer is using a competitive product and desires to move to SEP SBE 12.0, Symantec offers highly discounted pricing to move to SEP SBE 12.0 (Price can vary around $15-$17 per node depending on volume).
Question 2: How does license enforcement work?
In SEP SBE 12.0, there are licensing checks for maintenance dates and the number of nodes deployed. If maintenance expires, the product stops downloading new definitions. All features will continue to work, but no new content will be downloaded on the manager or on the client.
Product-Related:
Question 1: What is the difference between SEP SBE 12.0 and SEP 11.0?
SEP SBE 12.0 is a product optimized for Small Business (<=100 nodes) customers. It is much easier to install and use. From a protection technology standpoint, SEP SBE has all the features of SEP 11.0 except for Application and Device Control. It also does not support NAC. With the introduction of SEP SBE 12.0, Symantec now has targeted offerings based on customer segment. If your customer is larger than 100 users, you should recommend SEP. If your customer has less than 100 users, SEP SBE is the better fit.
Question 2: What are the system requirements for Symantec Protection Center (also known as Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition 12 Manager)?
The Symantec Protection Center requires the following system requirements
32-bit processor: 1-GHz Intel Pentium III or equivalent minimum (Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent recommended)

– Intel Itanium is not supported

64-bit processor: 2-GHz Pentium 4 with x86-64 support or equivalent minimum
– Intel Itanium is not
256 MB of RAM minimum (1 GB of RAM recommended)

Migration Support:
Question 1: Can I install Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition 12 over my current Symantec AntiVirus or Symantec Client Security Client?
The Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition 12 Client can be installed over Symantec AntiVirus version 9.X and newer, and Symantec Client Security 3.X and newer.
Question 2: What if my clients already have the SEP 11.0? Would I have to uninstall SEP 11.0 and then install version 12 Small Business Edition?
A customer that has SEP 11.0 deployed will have to uninstall the manager and then install the SEP SBE 12.0 manager. The SEP SEB 12.0 manager can simply be used to push out the client software and that will upgrade SEP 11.0 clients to SEP SBE 12.0 client.

I have been trying to get a
I have been trying to get a confirmation on the above post, but apparently nobody in Sales, Customer Care, or Licensing (each one kept bouncing me to the other) seems to know about this.
The reason I was asking for a confirmation (but was unable to get) is that we just recently renewed on July 28 for a license start on 8-17. I just found out about SEP SBE yesterday. We renewed SEP 11.0, 25-user, Basic, for 12 months. Part# 12151272. However, we are actually running SAV 10.2. So, while we are entitled to have SEP, we have decided to stay with SAV since SEP is overkill for our business. I thought SEP SBE might be a better fit, so I wanted to look at it and test it. The above post tells me that we should be able to get SEP SBE 12 for $0. But, there's a number of stipulations in the post about a license transfer being "NOT RECOMMENDED", and that a cross-grade should be done at time of renewal. OK, what's not recommended about it? Since we've already renewed does this mean I have to wait until next year? Or, would I be able to at least test out the product and see how well it works/doesn't work. (Right now I have it installed and running using the 30-day trial on one client, and the client has these interesting high CPU usage levels...)
