Fresh SEPM installation with SQL Database (remote computer)

Hello all , I have a basic question regarding SEPM installation with a remote SQL database. The OS team has installed SQL server 2008 R2 on a remote computer . I have its hostname and IP address . I have install SQL client on SEPM hostname machine for connectivity with remote SQL machine ? No do I need to go onto the SQL 2008 R2 machine and create the SEPM database manually ? or it will create the SEPM DB automatically for me when I supply the SQL DB server parameters during the SEPM installlation ?

Would appreciate if some 1 can shed some light on this aspect. Regards

When you do the install, you will input the creds to connect to the SQL and the SEPM install will create everything it needs. So you're correct ;)

But for proof, see the first part of this article:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH192646

"Note: This procedure is optional when installing of the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM). The SEPM installer will create the necessary database and user during installation. This procedure should only be followed in environments where database rights and permissions are tightly controlled, or highly customized database settings are required."

Hello Brians thanks for your response and sharing the article. Just to reconfirm when I put in the SQL server IP/hostname and creds username and password it will automatically create everything for the SEPM  ? I do not need to go on the SQL server and create the SEPM database manually as specified in the article ?

Secondly should I use SQL authentication or Mixed mode auth ? Regards

Correct. That should be the expected behavior.

It's up to you but here's an explanation and pros/cons:

    Personally, I'd use Windows auth.

Brian one more thing :) when I deploy the communication update package is it mandatory for the client to restart to pick up the changes ? or clients will pick up the changes ( to point to new server ) instantly ?

    Regards

    Nope :)

Replacing the comm (sylink) file does NOT require a restart. The clients will point to the new server almost immediately. When the sylink file is replaced, smc is restarted so clients will check in on the smc restart. But, again, the PC itself does not require a reboot. It all happens quietly in the background.
