FSA- Restore of a placeholder file to an alternate location

First, we use TSM for backups/restores.  Our company policy is to restore to a "restore" directory and allow the user to move their data from that location.  The issue that I am currently having is when a user goes to open or copy the file we are getting the following error "An unexpected error occurred while reading \\...."

When we do our restore we are restoring the placeholder file (active file in TSM).  I do realize that once the user tries to do anything with that placeholder file that it will try to recall that file from the Archive.

What I need to know is how we can use our Backup software to restore our placeholder files to an alternate location - or if that is even possible.

FYI - we are using EV 8.0 SP2 and our target is a clustered Win2K3 server.  The FSA agent is loaded on server that hold the "restore" area.  As a matter of fact it is in the same cluster that our archive points are on.

This would depend on your

This would depend on your backup software and nothing in relation to EV.  Basically if it can handle the alternate data stream also known as reparsepoint.  Without this it will not work properly.  You will need to test it or contact the backup vendor to enquire further.

EV ships with a utility named FSAUtility to restore, move, recreate and so on placeholders.

Restore works fine, but

The restore works fine, but when we go to open or copy the file it errors out - "An unexpected error occurred while reading \\....".

I just do not see this as an issue with the backup software.

FSAUtility is not an option at this point, because our Backup team will not have access to it only the Backup software.

I am trying to find out if we can use our Backup software to restore placeholder files to an alternate location.

What version of TSM are you

What version of TSM are you using? I believe you need to be on at least 5.3.4 for it to correctly backup EV placeholders. it does sound like there is an issue with the backup and restore within TSM. if the restored placeholder was good, it should recall the file OK - providing the FSA Agent is installed. I'm assuming you are attempting to restore to a temp folder on the same server as where the original placeholder is?

As a test, what happens if you backup a placeholder, delete it from it's orginal location and then restore the placeholder from TSM to its original location. Does that then work? If that works, then TSM fundamentally can backup and restore the placeholders. I have heard issues in the past of some backup software not correctly doing a 'redirected restore' which is what you are trying to do.
