FSA Volume Processing
Hi,
I'm running EV 8.0 SP3. I just want to confirm my understanding of EV's processing of FSA volumes. I have a file server (Win2K3 R2 SP2) that I'm archiving with FSA. There is a top-level share, call it \\file_server\top_share. From this top-level share, there are subfolders that are shared amongst department members, e.g., \\file_server\top_share\Finance, \\file_server\top_share\HR, etc.
From the Admin Console, I added the \\file_server\top_share as an FSA volume, then within the volume, I created archive points for some of the subfolders (\\file_server\top_share\subfolder1, subfolder2, etc). I want to archive only those subfolders, not everything under \\file_server\top_share. My understanding is that at this point, when I run the FSA task, it'll process and archive *only* those subfolders for which I've created archive points under the volume. Is this correct?
I'm asking because a Symantec tech support engineer told me to NOT check the 'archive this volume' box on the FSA volume property page; he said checking that box would cause FSA to archive the entire volume (all subfolders), which is not what I want. But unchecking that box and running the FSA task causes none of the subfolders to be archived. So I think the Symantec engineer was wrong about that setting. I've just checked that box and am running the FSA task in report mode to see what it archives. My prediction is that it'll archive only the subfolders that have archive points within the volume. Can someone (hopefully from Symantec) confirm this please? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Charles, Your
Hi Charles,
Your understanding is correct and the support rep is misinformed. The archive point effectively acts as a marker within the volume for where archiving will start. It also creates an archive for the files to go in to that are archvied below it. So with no archive point, there is no archive, so no archiving will happen.
What you will find though is that all folders on the volume will be scanned while we look for archive points. This could take some time depending on the size of the folder structure. If you do not want the additional top level folders to be scanned, then add them in as folder targets, and uncheck the 'archive this target' box. That should prevent FSA from scanning them.

Darren,
Thanks for the confirmation!

I have a 7 TB file system and have added the top folders and unchecked the 'archive this target' box and left only 1 folder (very small) as archive this folder. Though when I run the task in report mode, it takes a long-time, so I'm not sure if its not scanning the entire file system.
thanks
