I'm trying to access an ftp server via a web browser but it is failing with a timeout error.

I've not using the SWG FTP proxy but I am using the web proxy. Do I need to activate the FTP proxy in order to access/download files via FTP?

    Thanks

Typically the FTP proxy does not work with browsers. If the FTP settings in the browser is pointed to use the web/http proxy it may work from the browser. Otherwise I would suggest using an FTP client that is compatible witht the FTP proxy.

The following document may be helpful as well.

I'm not actually using the FTP proxy. That function hasn't been enabled. Does that make a difference?

What a user is acutally doing is trying to download a file from a website, but the file is located on an FTP server. When she trys to download it, she just get's a time out error. Same thing happens when I try and log into an FTP server via web brower.

Would a workaround be that I send FTP traffic directly to the Internet with the PAC file so it doesn't touch the web proxy?

    Thanks

Yes bypassing the SWG for FTP traffic is would be a workaround for the issue you are seeing.
