Full and Incremental backups with different sel lists

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hello,

I'm using BE 2012.

CHALLENGE.

I have a server to backup with 4Tb total file system on 9 different local disks that takes 4 days to full backup. TOO LONG.

SOLUTION ATTEMPTED.

I created 5 different jobs

     - 4 FULL each saturday with different groups of disks according to their size.

     - 1 INCREMENTAL every night with all disks.

PROBLEM.

The incremental gets «rule blocked».

Is there any way to make this work? Or any other way to solve this?

Thanks in advance

Full and Incre/Diff cannot have seperate selection list.

Create your backup jobs with Full and Incremental like below example:

Job 1 - for 1st group of disks - Full (every Sat) + Incremental (every remaining day)

Job 2 - for 2nd group of disks - Full (every Sat) + Incremental (every remaining day)

Job 3 - for 3rd group of disks - Full (every Sat) + Incremental (every remaining day)

Job 4 - for 4th group of disks - Full (every Sat) + Incremental (every remaining day)

Basically split the jobs and have then scheduled to run at differnet times. I know this not exactly what you thought it should be like, but, this way if 1 of the job has to fail due to any reason, you can be sure that rest of the data is safely being backed up.

Thanks for your suggestion SuperBrain.

That way I may have 4 incremental jobs runing at the same time against the same client! Should I expect a problem with consistency or significant performance loss?

BTW, since you are a Symantec employee, perhaps you could accept and forward my suggestion to avoyd spoiling the good things when upgrading the version of the software.

There are a lot of "small" things in BE2012 that were a lot better on 2010.

In order to avoid the conflicts/performance loss, you can have the 4 incremental jobs scheduled to run at different times of the day.

I appreciate your feedback for BE 2012, however, there is a way where you can submit your suggestions/enhancement requests to the concerned team.

Go to the following URL search to make sure a similar request is not already present (vote +1 if a similar request it present) OR submit a new idea:

I think the main problem you are facing is that your Full backups take a very long ime, cutting your abilities to perform incremental backups for as long as the Full is running. I would suggest you group your 9 disk in 7 groups (max possible with my method)

Job 1 - for 1st group of disks - Full (every Sun) + Incremental the rest of the week

Job 2 - for 2nd group of disks - Full (every Mon) + Incremental the rest of the week

Job 3 - for 3rd group of disks - Full (every Tue) + Incremental the rest of the week

Job 4 - for 4th group of disks - Full (every Wed) + Incremental the rest of the week

Job 5 - for 4th group of disks - Full (every Thur) + Incremental the rest of the week

Job 6 - for 4th group of disks - Full (every Fri) + Incremental the rest of the week

Job 7 - for 4th group of disks - Full (every Sat) + Incremental the rest of the week

This way ys you will have 1 full job running every night but that also will allow it to finish off productions hours with additional Incrementals of the rest ofthe data.

Yes, I kow that but, as you also know, the start time may not be respected because of the availability of the tape devices, so I'll have to direct them to a specific device.

This kind of workarounds should not be necessary.

Best regards and many thanks for your help.
