  • 1.  Functionality with cloud service

    Hello,

we are currently using Endpoint Protection Small Business on our clients. Management is done by Endpoint Protection Manager that runs on our Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Standard.

At the moment we are using v12 and we want to upgrade to v2013. As of v2013 Symantec offers a cloud-based manager. I have some questions regarding this:

    • does the cloud service offer the same functionality as the local SEP Manager, esp. roll-out (push) of SEP to clients and handling of security policies for the SEP clients?
    • do we have an overview of our domain's computers (will Active directory data be synchronized to the cloud service)?
    • do we still need a sort of sync component on a server that tells the cloud service which client computers are available in our domain or could we free our server from all Symantec manager components?
    • does it produce much traffic (our bandwidth is not soooo super)? I assume that every SEP client will pull virus signatures, programm updates etc. from web, right?
    • can it be used for free (when you have a Protection Suite Small Business license)?
    • is there a migration path from a local v12 SEP manager installation to a 2013 cloud manager scenario? Any step-by-step documentation?
    • is there a documentation of the cloud service?

    Thanks & best regards,

    Hi Tantalos,

    In answer to your queries:

    - Does the cloud service offer the same functionality as the local SEP Manager, esp. roll-out (push) of SEP to clients and handling of security policies for the SEP clients?

For the most part yes, you use the online portal to monitor, deploy and administer your agents - including setting policies for said agents.

    - Do we have an overview of our domain's computers (will Active directory data be synchronized to the cloud service)?

Active Directory is not usable in conjunction with the portal. There is a redistributable package which can be downloaded so that you can roll the install out via Group Policy, but AD itself doesn't directly connect to the online portal. You will however be able to see an overview of all machines on your network that have the service installed, and then drill down into each machine to find further statistics, perform scans, review quarantined items, etc.

    - Do we still need a sort of sync component on a server that tells the cloud service which client computers are available in our domain or could we free our server from all Symantec manager components?

No - each individual agent connects to the Symantec.cloud servers to confirm it's on/offline status.

    - Does it produce much traffic (our bandwidth is not soooo super)? I assume that every SEP client will pull virus signatures, programm updates etc. from web, right?

If you have a lot of machines installed then it has the potential to. Each agent will download an AV update everyday which is around 150 Mb. However, to resolve this, you can designate one or more machines as 'Local Update Hosts'. This way, only these machines will connect to the servers to download the latest definitions and updates, and then all other machines will connect to the LUH's directly to pull the same information.

    - Can it be used for free (when you have a Protection Suite Small Business license)?

No, but you can trial it on the buy.symanteccloud.com website.

    - Is there a migration path from a local v12 SEP manager installation to a 2013 cloud manager scenario? Any step-by-step documentation?

Unfortunately not, the cloud service is completely seperate, so you will have to uninstall the onprem SEP from all your machines, and then proceed to install the .cloud version.

    - Is there a documentation of the cloud service?

There is more information on the buy.symanteccloud.com website, you can also check out https://hostedendpoint.spn.com/help/PDF/GettingStarted.pdf it's not been updated for a while unfortunately but will give you a good idea of what the portal looks like and some of the functions.

    Hope this helps

    Regards,

    - FP

Is there a migration path or wizard if I want to switch from cloud to local and vice versa?  Or do I have to start over from scratch and install everything?
