Messaging Gateway

Symantec Brightmail Gateway device installed last night - SMS 8300.  Updated to version 7.7.0-17 this morning.

I am getting an alert notification every hour that says "The system detected ### viruses in the past 1 day" with a breakdown of the number of viruses, worms, etc.  I really don't need this notification but I can't find where to turn it off.  I do not see any category for this type of message in the Alert Conditions.  I could lengthen the time frequency but I DO want the other alert conditions to send a notification every hour if necessary.  I just don't need this one at all.

Hello Laura, 

This sounds like the Outbreak Detection. You could either turn that off or up your thresholds. It basically alerts you when you receive a certain amount of viruses per interval. If you make it a larger threshold or longer interval this should alleviate this issue.

It is set as the default of 30 within 1 day.  So that is probably what is causing the alert notification as you said.  I am not sure I want to turn it completely off so what would you recommend as a higher number of viruses per day that would alert me to an outbreak without the annoying e-mails?

I don't think I could really give a recommended number for that. As I'm sure you could expect, environments are vastly different so it's hard to give a recommended number for your environment. What I would do is double it and see how that works for you. Once you get an average of what you would be receiving to where it's not being annoying then keep it there.

This number is really something you just have to play with and see what works for you. Sorry I can't answer that better.
