Ghost 11.5.2165 for Linux and DOS - strange issue
first, hello to all !
second , my problem :-), here it is:
due some tests, i discovered an issue for ghost 11.5 for DOS
1. made one image with ghost for linux (a backup of a ntfs partition). The result was in my case a file of 2.270.328.522 bytes (let's call aaa.gho)
both ghost versions (DOS and Linux) can restore well aaa.gho
2. made one more image with ghost for DOS (this time, a backup of a linux partition) - let's call bbb.gho this second image
both ghost versions can restore well bbb.gho too
both images are made in a ntfs partition (in my case D:)
the problem is when i try to restore aaa.gho (after i've created bbb.gho). The error returned by ghost is:
Image File Selection Error (1909)
is not a Symantec Ghost file. Or is not correct span segment. Task can not be completed
P.S.
i've made the test with 3 images ( two created by ghost for linux and one created by ghost for DOS) with the same results:
images created with ghost for linux are damaged by ghost for DOS - the damaged image size aaa.gho is not affected ( 2.270.328.522 bytes)
thx

Hi, Well that's an
Hi,
Well that's an interesting problem.
We have seen cases before where a ghost span (.ghs) of one image (say longfilename1.ghs) has been overwrtiten when another image is created with an overlapping name (longfilename2.gho) - a short version of each filename was created (in 8.3 form) when the span was created, the second then overwrites the first as the names are the same. However I don't think this happens with .gho files.
When the problem with restoring aaa.gho shows up, does the restore fail on both linux & DOS? Ghost has probably generated a ghosterr.txt file on this failure, could you please post it here (for both DOS & Linux if both fail). Thanks.
What distro/version of Linux are you running? Do you happen to know what NTFS filesystem driver is running in the distribution (e.g. NTFS3g)?
Thanks, Robert.
thx for reply Rob both ghost
thx for reply Rob
both ghost versions failed to restore aaa.gho. Now i'm not at home to post ghosterr.txt
The linux distro is PCLinux2009 and ghost seems to work fine (an fast) on it. Anyway , i don't think ghost for linux is the problem - since both versions of ghost can restore well images created on this linux enviroment. The problem appears when i make an image in DOS enviroment - images created in linux enviroment are damaged. Something happen there..
Anyway when get back home , i'll post more information about ntfs3g version i use and ghosterr.txt
P.S.
GhostExplorer fail to handle affected images too
thx again
Thanks for the info - I'll
Thanks for the info - I'll look for the ghosterr.txt & ntfs3g info when you post it.
BTW - what DOS environment are you using?
Thanks, Rob.
both ghost version does not
both ghost version does not generate any ghosterr.txt in this case
However, i guess i found the problem :-). In a few words windows is (was) the problem
Is known that win does not support linux filesystem (in my case ext3 filesystem created with latest e2fsprogs). I remembered that i installed few weeks ago the latest CentOS
On my dualboot system, I forgot to run chkdsk with f parameter after that..
Anyway after chdsk have "corrected" the errors ghost for DOS does not affect linux images anymore
the ntfs3g driver is the latest 2009.4.4
Thx again for support !
ghost still rocks :-)
P.S.
There is a little bug in ghost for DOS when i try parition form image>file type>*.* does not show any file but directories so if the file does not have gho extension i cannot select it with ghost for DOS
Glad to hear that the
Glad to hear that the problem's resolved :-)
Thank's also for the note about the partition from image with file type *.*. I've made a note of it to look into.
Cheers, Robert.
