I seem to have hit a roadblock; I have a set of HP 255 1 laptops to image (all identical hardware).

I've created a Windows 7 build, and created an image through ghost's bootable WinPE CD (these systems are segregated and not on a network). The image created verifies correctly in ghost.

Now, when I deploy the image (to another laptop, or the same laptop), it doesn't work. If I image the "OS partition" in Ghost, the error I get on reboot after imaging is "invalid partition table". If I creat the image from the first entry (which I presume is the entire HDD), I get "no bootable device" as the error message on reboot.

I'm guessing it has something to do with EFI/MBR side of things but in the bios it's set to compatibility mode (cannot install windows 7 otherwise).

    Any suggestions?

First what is the systems set to boot as UEFI or BIOS?

What version of Ghost32 are you using? As all the versions that are available to those with GSS 2.51. are not compatible with UEFI partitions; only new versions v12+ that are available with Altiris subscriptions work (and not without problems).

If you only have a few machines to image you may be better using DISM to copy the Windows partition.

Have you tried imaging the entire hard disk rather than by partition?  Are you aware that Windows 7 consists of two partitions, both of which are required for Win 7 to boot?  The first partition is 100-200Mb in size and hidden.

As you are already using WinPE, have you tried using DISKPART to create and format the partitions, and IMAGEX to create and deploy images?

Finally, the reference to DISM in Pete's answer above would not work with the version of WinPE supplied with Ghost, (V2) as DISM was introduced in WinPE V3, based on the Win 7 kernel.

I have tried imaging the entire HDD, and the partition. I went through 10+ re-imaging processes yesterday in an attempt to get it to work. I think the issue is around how HP handle the MBR/UEFI/BIOS side of things, whereby you cannot disable UEFI; it just creates a "fake" MBR if you ask it to use MBR.

In the end, I gave up and have now moved the client to clonezilla.

    Thanks for the replies.
