  • 1.  Ghost client hangs after "To Virtual Partition"

    Posted Aug 02, 2006 04:28 PM
I've just upgraded from Ghost 1.0 to 1.1, and I'm having a variety of issues. The main one right now is this:

I need to image an XP laptop with no floppy disk. Always in the past I've just used a floppy to boot the client and get it to connect to the Ghostcast server.

So this time I installed the Ghost client on the laptop. The "Universal Packet Driver" did not work, so I changed the template to Intel Pro/100 (the laptop has an Intel Pro 100 VE adaptor). Using that template, the server can make the client reboot into the virtual partition, but then after the blue "Ghost" screen comes up, the client hangs (unpingable) and on the server, the Ghostcast server sits there forever waiting for a client to connect. The last thing in the log is "To Virtual Partition - Success".

If I reboot the client at this point, it tries to go back to the virtual partition, fails, and boots back into Windows.

Also, if I try to create a boot CD (which was the reason we updated to 1.1 in the first place), no matter what I choose, after burning the ISO to a CD, I get "boot disk error" on the client. I am able to burn other ISOs so I know I'm doing it right.

Also, in the client properties in the Ghost Console, I have the following:
Network Card Error: Multiple Network Card Drivers Install....
    (then it cuts off)

I'm pulling my hair out! I really really need to get this thing ghosted ASAP and I've been working on it for two days straight! Please help!

    The -NOIDE worked for me!

For the bootable CD, if you haven't already, try using MSDOS instead of PCDOS. We've found that MSDOS seems to boot on a wider variety of systems than PCDOS - we're looking into this.

It sounds like there might be interrupt sharing between the network adapter and disk (or USB), hence you could try using -nousb. What is the make/model of the XP laptop?
While some network drivers don't share interrupts well, the universal network driver in general manages them correctly. In order to use the Universal Packet Driver the PXE option ROM needs to be enabled in BIOS, its possible its disabled by default on this laptop.

I haven't been able to make a boot disk with MS-DOS yet, but like I said, the -noide switch worked for me. It also worked on a newer Toshiba laptop. I don't understand what it does (they are IDE disks), but it works. Not sure how to mark this as 'answered'.

Sorry - I missed that noide worked for you - that's good news. Ghost includes its own IDE access code and uses it by default to take and restore images on IDE disks. The -noide switch means that the Bios will be used to read and write to the disk instead of ghosts cloning code.
