  • 1.  Ghost client (ngtray and ngctw32) not running after Windows XP Pro update

Odd....we have a bunch of Acer 7250 laptops. Use them all the time, have a range of images for them.  Just pushed a particular image to one, updated it in terms of Windows XP updates and installed a NOD32 client - all good. After the last Windows update & reboot stage, Ghost no longer runs. Had a look in task manager, NGTRAY and NGCTW32 are both missing. If I try to run them manually, nothing.

As far as I can tell, all components for the Ghost client are present and correct on the PC.

Didn't spot this problem until after I had deployed this image to a classroom full of machines. Image deploys fine. SID change and Configuration fine, but task then fails as the machines have at this point gone 'deaf', so eventually the task fails as the clients don't go to selected OS of course.

Tried to re-install the client on one just in case - failed with code 51.

    A bit stumped now!

This looks like something that a badly configured antivirus program might do. Have seen something similar with McAfee, which removes remote control software as default behaviour when it is installed, thus rendering our machines incapable of remote control by helpdesk staff.
If possible, try without the NOD32 client and see if this makes any difference.

Ah, good thought, thank you. Not had any issues with NOD doing this before, as the whole process tends to follow a pattern of install Ghost client, install a standard NOD package that I built etc, but it's certainly worth a look.

Will report back what I find.

Well, built a fresh one and removed NOD32 - no change. Also tried re-installing the Ghost client on the machine having removed NOD - no luck. Apears to copy files over fine, then fails with code 51. Remote client un-install fails as well (expected really, since console can't talk to client).

Looks like one of the 83 Windows updates I applied to the image might be to blame.....

Back to 'odd'.  Manually un-installed the Ghost client from the lappy, reboot. Push client to lappy from console - installed fine. Re-boot, Ghost client now running perfectly as it did before all the updates.  Re-install NOD32 using the sme package as before as the last step, all good.

    Quick - image it!!
