  • 1.  Ghost Console closes while running tasks

We are running Ghost Console on 18 different servers to manage different sites. We frequently have issues with the Console closing during a task. Most often, it happens while performing a remote client install, but it has happened on imaging and AI tasks, also. When I open the Console back up and view the log, there is no reference to the last running task that it closed during.
Most of the servers are Dell SC430 machines running 2003 STD. The servers also house WSUS and EPO (Network Associates/McAfee). In addition, we have another drive installed on each for file sharing within the center.
We have made the necessary exception entries in McAfee, and have checked the log to make sure that McAfee is not causing the issue.
    Any ideas?

No ideas off the top of my head, just to check - which version of GSS do you have? I don't work on the console UI myself so after knocking on some doors to talk with the devs for that piece I'd be starting with trawling through the source-control and bug database archives for anything similar-sounding.

If that turns up nothing - and since we're really busy here at Ghost HQ right now, it'll probably take me a couple days to run through this - I'd be inclined to attach a debugger to the console process; sometimes, certain kinds of internal faults can manage to cause the error-reporting part itself to fail and not display a useful error but they do show up if you have a debugger attached. The "Debugging Tools for Windows" tool WinDbg is enough of a debugger for this purpose, and if it does catch an exception in the console process it can write out a dumpfile that we can analyse.

Nigel, thanks for the response. I'll see about setting up the debugger.
We are using both 1.0 and 1.1, and this happens with both versions. Our company has been using Ghost (ghost.exe) for a few years, but just started using the console late last year. As time goes on, we are using more and more features. We're now to the point that we are using it to track hardware and are gearing up to use this for our software auditing for all workstations. In the past, this issue has only been a minor inconvenience. As we move forward, it is becoming more of an issue than inconvenience.
We greatly appreciate you looking into this, and will do our best to provide you whatever assistance we can from our end.
