Created: 13 Nov 2012 | 3 comments

We have the ghost solution Suite installed on a 32 bit Windows 2003 server.  We are trying to get the image of a 2008 R2 64 bit server.  After I initialize the image creation task I ge tthe error "Could not find boot Drive"

Ghost is not intended for imaging servers. However, what operating system are you booting the 2008R2 server to?  If DOS, don't waste your time. If WinPE, make sure you have the correct VISTA 32 bit drivers added to WinPE for the drive support on your 2008R2 server. This may need you to research the chipsets on your 2008R2 server, as servers generally do not come with Vista drivers, as vista was never a server operating system. However, if you know what chipset is driving the hard disks, you may be able to get something from the chip vendor's website.

This is our first time using ghost so I wasn't actually booting to anything.  I was just kicking off the image creation and it was failing.  So I need to boot into a WinPE environment in order to hopefully make this work?

Ghost offers both "hot imaging" and static imaging where you boot to WinPE and run Ghost from there, to backup a drive.  For a server situation, the static imaging method is the only one likely to work.
