Ghost Crashing in PC DOS

  • 1.  Ghost Crashing in PC DOS

I am having problems with a network boot disk on a DELL Latitude 131L running AMD Turion 64 X2 processor. When the attempting to boot the Laptop into PCDOS to extract the image ghost crashes. I know it is ghost as I have removed the echo command from the autoexec.bat file. It binds the network card and sets up the mouse drivers but when the ghost.exe is run the program does not start it sit with the cursor flashing on the next line.

I have tried leaving it overnight in case it was taking a long time to run; however when I come back the next day it is still the same. The console I used to create the disk seems to work fine for other Dell laptops running Centrino Duos and other Dells machines. I read on another form about using the -FNI switch may solve the problem so I altered the autoexec.bat file to run ghost with these switches but it seems to make no difference.

I am a bit stuck on this one, any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Stuart,

What version of Ghost do you use? Do you use a USB floppy?

Could you try Ghost with the switch '-nousb'  ?

I am using ghost version 10 and 8, I have tried it using USB floppy disks under version 8 and a booting USB key under version 10. I can not boot under version 10 from floppy because it seems to get stuck when trying to create a RAMDISK as version 10 is to large to fit on 1 floppy. Also it is a laptop and so it would be very hard to attach a none USB hard drive to it. I mentions this becuase I guess the -nousb option means it will not search for USB devices or does the option do something else?

    Hi Stuart,

Ghost 8 and 10 are very different products (Symantec Ghost 8 and Norton Ghost 10), the latter is the consumer version.

Usually, Ghost would try to acquire all the USB devices. nousb switch will stop Ghost trying to find any USB devices. Since you are not using other USB devices for Ghost operation (other than booting with one) this should not affect the operation - if it solves the problem.

I have tried adding the -nousb switch with the usbkey but the result seems to be the same. To double check the switch does not have to uncased in speakmarks or any other special characters. I am going to try creating the boot-disk on CD but is there anything else I should try?

    Hi Stuart,

I am begining to think this could be something to do with the Ghost version you use. Is it 8.0? Do you have access to a later version of Ghost ?

I will try to find a similar machine to verify it.

The problem first happened using boot disk created with version 8 but to see if that was the problem I have already downloaded a trail copy of version 10 and created a bootable usb key this had the same problem i.e. crashing when ghost starts.

    Hi Stuart,

Do you mean version 10 or GSS 1.0?

The trial version of GSS was updated only in last December. If you downloaded it prior to that, it would have been version 8.0 since there was no trialware update for 8.2 and 8.3.

If it is actually version 10, it could be Norton Ghost, which is a different product.

The program I used to create the boot disk was the Symantec Ghost Console it came with a number of other programs like ghostcast server which as i understould it make up the GSS. Then in the about tab under the help menu it says that the product version number is 11.0.0.1502. Which is strange because I thought I downloaded version 10. Does this answer the question?

    Hi Stuart,

Yes, that answers my question and clarifies many things.

There was another forum post too about this model, and it could be a model specific issue. Did you try with the CD boot?

Other option is using Ghost32 with WinPE - if you do not use Console.

I am having problem burning the iso produced by the console but I think that is down to the burning software we have. The other question is WinPE a switch or another way of creating the boot disk?

    Hi Stuart,

No, Currently GBW does not support creating a WinPE disk. But if you have a WinPE disk, you can run Ghost32.exe from any version.

    Hi Stuart,

I am not sure if you still have the problem, but they had posted a solution in the following link.

Hi I managed to get it work by using a CD version ghost in the ATAPI Drive of the laptop this seemed to solve the problem as well.
