I am trying to back up a server using Ghost Solution Suite 11

I have installed the remote client and backed up other servers on the same domain with no problem. This particular server (Windows 2003) goes through the process of starting a backup in the Ghost Console, but gets to the point where the log indicates "To Virtual Partition" and it gets no further.

On the server there are lines which read "<IP Address:1346> polling for bound server <server name>"

In the actual message the actual IP address and server name appear above...this message just continues to repeat itself until I do a CTRL + BREAK and then have to do a ghreboot to get the server functional again.

Anybody know why I can't seem to proceed with the backup on this server?

    Thanks.

    Hi there,

The "To virtual partition" error usually means you need to update the driver for the network card. Juts determine the network card and (since you are using version 11) get the DOS driver, then import it and update the template used for that client (right-click on it in the machine group folder, choose Properties, change in the dropdown on the client tab). However, I would recommend using Ghostcasting. The console client was not designed to be deployed to server operating systems; this is especially true if the machine uses RAID.

    Hi,

Right click on To Virtual Partition and choose Event Details to have more insight on what the issue is.

In your case it might be lack of NIC drivers, so try adding the drivers and update the status of the issue.

The following document may help you in adding the drivers,

So I've spent the last week or so trying to get this to work.

The server I'm trying to Ghost is a PowerEdge 2900 with two NIC cards...they are Broadcom BCM5708C NetXtreme II Gig E cards. I have tried changing out the "manually selected templates" to a variety of different Broadcom templates that exist in the "Browse for Template" window and have also gone to Broadcom's website and downloaded the latest version of the driver to the server.

Still I continously get "Failed to reboot client to recovery partition" error in the event details when a task fails. I also tried to just create a new image task (versus backup regime) and the same thing happens.

    Anybody have any suggestions?

    Hi,

Since this machine has a server configuration, it might not be recommended to use Ghost. Though we could give it a try. You could try to image the machine by using the PreOS as Windows PE rather than trying to PC DOS which might not be as effective as the former.  Please use the driver that is given in the link below and also the steps that would be required for adding the driver to the WinPE boot package

    Hope this helps !

    Hi,

Imaging Dell PowerEdge 2900 have some known issues which are outlined in the document given below,

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH110720&locale=en_US

Its recommended to use WinPE as PreOS and add the drivers given in the document given below,

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH110257&locale=en_US

Adding drivers to WinPE boot package are explained in the link given below,
