Ghost explorer can't access to .gho file

  • 1.  Ghost explorer can't access to .gho file

    Posted Jan 19, 2013 07:15 AM

I have Ghost backup with 46 files.

I was working with ghost explorer to remove some files from this backup. At one moment it stopped to work, I closed the task from task manager. Since that moment I can't access this backup with ghost explorer. With opening the backup with ghost explorer I get a message "Please, select the file for the last segment in this image file". I tryed every file of this gho backup, but nothing worked. I am still in this message and can't continue. There is an important information I need to restore. Please, provide me a solution asap. If there is no solution, that why do we need this software?

    thank you in advance.

It looks like the Ghost Explorer program "hung" and left the Ghost image in an indeterminate state. Since you did not specify which version of Ghost you were using, it is difficult to guess at possible solutions.

Realistically, it is likely that this image will not be recoverable. I would personally never try to edit a Ghost file - nor would I use Ghost for backup. Ghost is primarily an imaging product for hard disk partitions and not a backup product. If you want a true backup product, you should look at Backup Exec.

    Hello.

I used ghost 8 for creating partition image file. I started from bootable disk and then made the image.

Now I formatted the first partion nd installed windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

I have ghost explorer. I was always using the explorer for recover files from images of ghost.

Your original posting specified a 46 file backup, then you refer to creating partition image file using Ghost 8. Are you saying that this partition contained 46 files?

How do you store your image files?

    gello.

Yes, the image contains 46 files with extensions GHO, G01, G02 etc.

I stored them on external Hard drive 2 TB. I connect it Through USB connection

It looks like your backup has suffered a data corruption.

If you are using a low cost USB drive, it can be the cause of unreliability.

:) I don't use low cost of USB drive.

I use Western Digital 2TB Elements external drive.

Please, check my 1st message: I was working with ghost explorer to remove some files from this backup. At one moment it stopped to work, I closed the task from task manager. Since that moment I can't access this backup with ghost explorer. With opening the backup with ghost explorer I get a message "Please, select the file for the last segment in this image file".

Something with indexing or I don't know what happend.

My question is if there is any software that fix corrupted gho file. Otherwise why symantec developed ghost explorer. I remember time when there was norton disk doctor with windows version that was restoring deleted partion if somebody did mistake. Plese, don't waste my time, or you can provide solution , or you claim that it is very dangerous to work with ghost explorer and if something happens no way to restore gho file and symantec has no solutions. Then we will use acronis or any other product that provides solutions and we will stop to work this symantec product.

    thanks in advance.

If you had an issue with Ghost Explorer that required you to close a process with task manager, then something in the system crashed. Whether it was Ghost Explorer or another application on your system, the end result is that your Ghost files were damaged.  I mentioned low cost USB drives as other users have had problems with this, but WD is a good make and is unlikely to be the cause.

It is well known that Ghost has not had an upgrade for several years, and therefore I have no wish to waste your time any further. Going with a modern and up to date tool like Acronis, or even the free WinPE download (which includes ImageX.exe for imaging and where the resultant WIM files can be mounted and edited), will hopefully give you a higher level of satisfaction.

That would be my conclusion based on the information exchanged in this thread.

In the past, when there was a development team, a developer called Nigel Bree would sometimes investigate such issues in his own time and possibly find a solution, but as the team was disbanded several years ago, there is no one available to do this.
