  • 1.  Ghost image capture problem:- the image size estimated is the size of the physical disk?

    Problem:-

When I try to capture a master image of approximately 12GB from a workstation with a 160GB HDD, the image size reports as 160GB. Due to server space and time constraints I have not let the jobs run to completion, but I have let it go to over 50GB before aborting.

    Environment:-
    • Ghost Solution Suite 2.5.1 running on Windows 2K8
    • Faronics Deep Freeze enterprise 6.61running on Windows 2K8
    • Master image PC is Dell Optiplex 960
    • OS Windows 7 Enterprise
The workstation to be imaged is prepared with Windows 7 Enterprise, Office 2007, utilities, then fully patched. Last step is to install Deep Freeze workstation seed.

Any suggestions as to the cause of this gratefully received.

    Hello,

The issue is Deep Freeze. Attempt the image while the drive is "thawed" or before Deep Freeze is installed. The issue is that the drive is encrypted by Deep Freeze and therefore is seen as all used space without a discernible file system- meaning Ghost must do a sector-by-sector image. Check the estimated space needed before Deep Freeze and compare.

    Thank you,

    Randy

    Thanks Randy,

I don't have a lot of experience with Ghost or Deep Freeze. I suspected Deep Freeze but the Faronics site published a document on integrating Deep Freeze with Ghost Solution suite:-

    http://faronics.com/Faronics/Documents/DFEnt_SymantecGhost.pdf

where they give a step by step on capturing a master image with a thawed Deep Freeze installation intact. I note now that the document is dated 2005. This problem only came to light for us when we stared to work on Windows 7 master images. Faronics advise that our Deep Freeze version 6.61 is fully Windows 7 compatible however.

I have just successfully captured an image on a workstation with the seed installed but not joined to Active Drectory (our normal config pre Ghost is - joined to AD with the seed only). All a little confusing and frustrating. I will try now an image joined to AD with no Deep Freeze client.

    Cheers
