Norton ghost and Symantec Ghost solution suite are hugely different. If you are looking for a Norton ghost experiance to have a console on your workstaion that will manage and back up this local workstation then GSS 3 is not for you. GSS 3 is intended to be installed on your server and then manage your client computers across your network. It requires a sql server to keep the client infomrioant in a database. You can then either set up a PXE server or have local automation folders installed so all your clients can boot down to windows PE to create an image and do other managment tasks.
You can install the Ghost Standard tools on your workstation but this are useful only for making ghost boot disks not for having a console on your system that manages and backs up your system.
The installation of the GSS server won't allow you to back up your local system it will allow you to manage then all the worstations on your network.
Norton ghost was replaced with Symantec System Recover. There was a 2011 version and then a 2013 version and I believe now there is a newer version with the New Veritas Name on it. It could install and make back ups of your local workstation if you were using the workstation version.
