Hi there, hope someone can help. I have installed GSS on my Windows 2008 server.

I have laptop that i want to backup to GSS running on the server. The problem is that the server is located elsewhere (different subnet, but it has its own IP address). My laptop is on a completely different network and I wanted to know if it was possible to have my laptop backed up to the server. Can someone please elaborate what steps are required for such 'remote backups'

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,

GSS more of useful for imaging (create and restore images) and not recommended for backup purposes. You can have different powerful Symantec products like Backup Exec, BESR, etc to take laptop backup efficiently.

Regarding your query about ghost operation in different subnet / network, as long as the machines are reachable and contactable over the network, ghost can do the imanging operation without any issue.

As Nitin has remarked, backup is not a recommended use of GSS, unless by backup you actually mean full imaging of the hard disk including the operating system and data. If you are mostly interested in data backup. either full or incremental, then the Backup Exec product stream is the more appropriate tool. For simple data backups, I would suggest a look at Robocopy which is a free command line utility from Microsoft that can synchronise files and folders between a source PC and a destination folder which can be local or on a server. It can handle either drive letter or UNC addressing.

hi there, thanks for the email and the for putting it correctly. Actually, i do want to perform make images. But the server is on a different network, is there any guide that shows how to do this? i.e. server on a different network and the laptop on another.

    thanks.
