I have a unrestorable image of a VMWare server that I need to get data from. I used Ghost Explorer and extracted an image file (.img) but I am unable to open that with any tool that I have found. Can anyone tell me how to force restore that image back to my server - or to get the data out of the image file. The backed up image is 556 GB, but when I try to restore it I get a 36000 error and the restore disk from image fails within 10 seconds.

Can this image be restored in some manner - or can I get the data out of the extracted file??

    Thanks!

Have you explored the error 36000 diagnostic options in this tech note:   http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH106950&locale=en_US  ??

The img file extension can sometimes indicate an ISO file - have you tried any of the ISO mounting tools, eg daemon tools or Slysoft's virtual CD ? Just rename img to iso and see if the file will mount.
