ghwalk32 kills Vista/Win7 IE8.

We've recently have been experimenting with creating images with windows 7, and have run into a snag with the latest update for ghost.

We use ghost walker here to rename each imaged pc. On all of the older versions it works fine, but in the lastest version of Ghwalk32 (1.1.5.1.2266) we noticed that once it is walked, Internet Explorer 8 no longer works and gives an "cannot find server" error message anytime a file is downloaded or flash is run.

This currently happens on both Windows Vista and Windows 7. Windows XP seemed to be fine after it is walked. Reverting to the older version of Ghwalk32 (1.1.5.0.2113) fixes the problem in Vista, but since it's supposedly incompatible with Windows 7 we're at a standstill.

Has anyone else run into this issue? Is there a command line or a fix for this bug?

Hi

Are you saying that you are not able to open and use the IE 8 browser or is that you are not able to connect to a site which you might have stored with user credential ?
Can you please explain the your scenario.

IE will start up correctly,

IE would start up correctly, but flash content would not load. also, If you attempt to download any file from any site, a message box would pop up that said along the lines of "cannot find server"

The bug verification procedure was as follows:

1) Make a WinPE boot image for PXE boot. Inject Ghwalk32.exe into the image and change the boot file for our environment.
2) boot the Master PC (A Windows 7 Professional 64 PC) with the PXE boot image above and image the PC using the command line "ghost32.exe /SURE /FX /IB" to a ghost server using unicast.
3) Get a second PC, and image the PC wth the image created above From The Ghost Server using unicast and the same command line switches used in step 2.
4) Reboot the 2nd PC after ghosting is complete and test the image. OS would test ok. IE8 would work as expected.
5) Boot the 2nd PC with the boot image created in step 1 and Ghost walk the 2nd PC with the Command Line "ghwalk32.exe /BV=1:2 /CN="TC-<RANDOM HEX>"
6) Reboot the PC after Ghost walking is complete and test the image. OS would fail test. IE8 would show Problems downloading files.

I've also tested this using Windows Vista Business 64 with the same results. the only change from the procedure above is that /BV in the ghwalk32 switch would read /BV=1:1 instead of /BV=1:2.

Also, if I use our old WinPE boot image from the last version. I have no problems with the above procedure using the same command line switches. Vista and IE8 works fine after a ghosting and ghost walk, but I can't use this for WIndows 7 since it is not compatible with Windows 7.

Possible workaround: can you try this in your environment?

Here is what I tried:

OS: Vista SP2
IE: 7

1. Go to any flash enabled site (I went to http://www.flasharcade.com)
2. Choose any page with flash (On flash arcade, choose any game)
3. The flash tool runs
4. I noted the loaded IE addons had shockwave object in it (screenshot: IE7-Vista-BeforeGhwalk-IE-Loaded-Addons.jpg)
5. Run GhWalk32 (I ran it from a One-click virtual partition) - my ghost version was 2.5.1.2278 (but should not really matter, I figure the same behavior will be seen with 2266 as well)
6. Do Step 1 and 2 again
7. I noted that the flash applet does not play (screenshot: IE7-Vista-AfterGhwalk.jpg) <-- PROBLEM
8. I also noted that loaded IE addons did not have shockwave object in it (screenshot: IE7-Vista-AfterGhwalk-IE-Loaded-Addons.jpg) - as opposed to observation in 4 above

So I went to http://www.adobe.com and downloaded the latest Adobe flash from (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer) and installed it

I repeated Steps 1 and 2 above and I saw the flash applets running again. <-- WORKAROUND

Please try this in your scenario and check if it works for you

I tried the workaround as

I tried the workaround as described on a ghostwalked (build 11.5.1.2266) vista image and ran into the same issues with IE8 that we had before.

First, I cannot download the update since I get the error saying that the site is unavailable. This is most likely the underlying issue that affects flash itself with ghost walker on our images.  (see attachment for error message.)

When I use another PC to download the installer and run it from a flash drive, it installs, but does not fix the issue. still see no flash, (or any plugins for that matter) and cannot download any file from any site.

also, from what I can tell, the screenshots you uploaded are from IE7. has this workaround been tested at Symantec on a PC running Internet Explorer 8 or are the older "manage add on's" windows accessible in IE8?

Possible workaround

We are experiencing the same issue here. Not only add-ons are not working but general file download with IE8 seems flacky.

The issue seems to be related to the user profiles. If you manually create a new user account after ghosting, Flash and add-ons start working again. It's only a workaround. It's not scalable for class-type deployments.

Using latest Ghost Suite (2.5.1) on Windows 7 Entreprise 64bits.

Yep. it seems to be related

Yep. it seems to be related to the user profile with the test I just ran here.

If I get one of our images and ghostwalk it, I get the issue. If I make a new account on that exact same machine, It seems to work fine on the new account, but fails on the old account.

hopefully, this narrows the bug down so they can fix it sooner. my boss is clamoring for a fix for this issue ASAP.
