Good Working Practices and Visual Studio Editions
Hi All,
Just started using SWV and done a few fairly simple apps and I am really pleased with it. I do however have a few newbie questions.
1) If the installer requests a restart what do you do?
2) If i am creating a new layer i install the package using the wizrd and then needed to apply a service pack what is the best method of putting this into the same layer?
3) Can I use SWV for virtualising servers, i.e SQL Server. Many of our devs need this installed on their workstations.
4) Has anyone got multiple versions of Visual Studio .NET working, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2010. This is an unusual one as the recommended approach from MS is to install in order oldest first. But, with SWV the previous layer isn't there after you install the software. Any help to a recommend approach to this would be appreciated.
Many thanks
Boozzard

1) Deactivating and reactiving the layer will suffice in many instances. There's a more detailed method you can follow up here on Connect by Brian, just run a search to find it.
2) Use the "add to layer" option, this will place the layer back into capture mode.
3) Yes, they're not officially supported but most work. MSSQL will not capture though because of how SWV works with LSASS.
4) Visual Studio doesn't work with SWV. You can capture it but due to DRM Visual Studio will only work on the machine it was captured on--so you cannot port it from machine to machine.

Thanks ever so much Jordan
Do you know if the Visual studio issue will be resolved as that is a major headache for us? I can see App-V can do it :S

We can't work around the issue without Microsoft making a special patch for us like they did App-V.

Well
Thats how Microsoft try's to keep the competition out :-( . They just follow their own guidelines and use DRM to stop this.
We tested with a script to overcome this, and showed it in Malta a few years ago on Manage Vision, but it is very illegal to use that kind if technology.
The version 6 can be done. after 2005 it cant be done anymore.
I tested with the Microsoft patch for App-V, but it integrates with App-V to vercome the DRM problem.
To bad

Disappointing
It's typical :-(
We have many SWV licenses but also some App-V (enough for development), do you know if would there be any issues installing both SWV and App-V side by side?
Many Thanks
SWV will keep working
If you install App-V and SWV together, SWV will keep working. There is no issue with that.
But,,,,
App- will not work.
It will stream 100% and then generate a blue screen.
As long as you dont use App-V there is no problem at all.
Ever thought about installing Visual Studio local to the machine?
That will keep you from the management nightmare using two Virtualization solutions.
SWV virtualises over 98% of all apps. where App-V will not get closer then 60%.

Yeah thats what we do now, but had issues with the scripted installs and pre-requisits making them a little hit and miss. I think this is the only way forward though so probably need to troubleshoot a little more or make a new image for the devs.
Cheers
If they are Virtual
Give your devs a Virtual Machine for theyr developments. Take a look at www.virtualstormnow.com
That will help you to solve a lot of problems
