Has anybody experienced performance issues with SEP and Google Chrome?

I know Chrome is not supported with the Browser IPS.

If Browser IPS is enabled could it have an impact on Chrome’s performance?

    Hello,

No.  Browser Protection could not have an impact on Chrome.

Correct, There is no Browser Protection plugin for Chrome. http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH174537

Browser Intrusion Prevention System (Browser IPS) is a new advanced protection feature included with the SEP 12.1 client. This technology works in conjunction with, but is separate from the Client Intrusion Detection System (CIDS) used by the client firewall-based IPS engine in SEP.

Browser IPS intercepts VBScript, JavaScript and ActiveX calls running in the browser as they are executed, inspecting the parameters of these calls for exploits to vulnerabilities. This allows the Browser IPS engine to detect exploit code which would otherwise have been hidden or obfuscated from other detection methods -including the CIDS engine.

    Reference: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH172174

The Intrusion Prevention policy includes browser intrusion prevention, which uses IPS signatures to detect the attacks that are directed at browser vulnerabilities.

See Enabling or disabling network intrusion prevention or browser intrusion prevention.

Chrome is not supported on SEP Browser IPS. See here:

If you disable SEP, does performance improve?

I must admit, I've been encountering Chrome performance issues lately as well.  As the others had stated, SEP's Browser IPS doesn't support Chrome yet, so I hadn't looked into it.

Have you had a chance to try disabling it yet?

I am not seeing any specific issue other than Chrome freezes when I have lot of chrome windows open at the same time.smiley I see a high CPU usage from chrome.exe.

Could probably be attributed more to memory leaks. I get this with FF as well with multiple tabs open. With or without SEP.

    Hello,

For testing, you may try disabling the browser IPS and check if that helps.

Enable or disable intrusion prevention or browser intrusion prevention

IPS uses a browser extension for Internet Explorer or Firefox to provide this protection. There is no Browser Protection plugin for Chrome.

    Hi,

Thank you for posting in Symantec community.

I would be glad to answer your query.

After looking at system requirements of SEP 12.1 RU3 these are the supported web browsers. Need to check note as well.

    Web browser

    • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, 8, 9, or 10
    • Mozilla Firefox 3.6 through 15.0.1
    • Google Chrome, through 22.0.1229.79

Note: This list of supported browsers applies to the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager only. For a list of supported browsers for Browser Intrusion Prevention, please see Supported Browser versions for Browser Intrusion Prevention.

Personally I don't see any major performance issue on my production machine. I daily use google chrome instead of Mozila firefox or IE smiley

Do you see any performance issue with google chrome?
