  • 1.  GPG software unable to encrypt using PGP public key

    Posted Jan 27, 2014 11:44 AM

    Hello,

We are using PGP command line software 10.1 and have shared the public key with oneof our business partners.

The business partner uses GPG software which uses the same PGP core engine, they were able to import the key we provided and were able to sign it.

When they try to use the key to encrypt the file to be sent to us it comes up with “encryption failed: Unusable public key.”

    Please advise.

    Thanks,

    Ramesh

    Hi Ramesh,

Please check with you business partner if they set the trust of the imported key.

Ask them to check also the key properties (--list-key-details) to see how the key properties are presented after importing.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Ramesh,

There is also the chance that the issue is related with the key type.
See: Unable to encrypt to a PGP key using GPG - TECH149510.

When they have attempted to encrypt, it is very likely that they have received more information in the output. They should provide you the complete details, in case they need assistance with this issue.
