GPT-Formatted Disk Error - Help!

Getting a GPT-Formatted disk error..saying legacy boot not supported. I
created an image...captured the image and trying to reimage the computer (any
of the new models) and we get this error. The computer is a HP ProDesk 600 G1
with i7 processor, 500GB HDD, 8GB RAM. I also created a new image with this
the other day and when imaging the computer I got a windows cannot be
installed prompt. Any suggestions, busy time of the year coming and we are
stuck. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!!

What exactly are you trying to boot to when you get the !legacy boot not supported! message?  If you are using DOS, you will never be able to work with a GPT partition as the two are fundamentally incompatible.

When you created a new image, and then tried to image the computer, was this to record an image or to install an image?

Try deleting the GPT partition on one machine and go back to an MBR partition to see if this offers a quick solution to your problem. You don't really need a GPT partition unless you want to create a single partition greater than 2Tb in size, and since you only have 500Gb hard disks, MBR partitions are perfectly adequate.

If you have a UEFI bios, try turning it off as Ghost 11.5.1.2266 does not support UEFI.

These machines should be on UEFI ,which use GPT partition table.Contact support and get the latest binries which support UEFI machines. Reference, http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=DOC6587

I am able to capture the image fine, but when I try to image the PC it will get this error. It loads Ghost fine, images fine and then reboots and then I get this error. I have tried with enabling and disabling UEFI and I still get the same error. I have tried to reach out to Symantec quite a few times but it doesn't seem that it will allow me to create a case ticket. Each time I try the "I still need help" button won't allow me to proceed. I have tried 3 different browsers and 2 different computers.

We do not need the GPT partition but when I tried to convert to the MBR partition it said that it couldn't because that is where the system image and boot resides. Unless there is another way to do this other than Disk Management and through CMD prompt.

If you do not need UEFI,follow the steps mentioned below. =>Navigate to the BIOS setup page =>Disable UEFI and ensure that legacy is ON =>Now the OS should not load(if there was a GPT install already) =>Reinstall the OS ,which would create MBR partition style as UEFI is OFF =>Install the apps and prepare the machine for imaging When done, create and restore images as you would normally do.

I disabled UEFI and created the image, captured the image. Tried to image the machine and then it restarted and thats when I would get the error. I'm assuming this is the same process that you have instructed to me? If there is something else I should be doing please let me know.

What operating system are you installing and trying to image?  If Win 7, are you imaging both of the partitions that Win 7 creates?  If you don't image both, then the resultant image will not boot.

Windows 7 64-bit - When I created the image I deleted the partitions to create only 1 partition. Is there something I am doing wrong? This last time I tried it, I left the 100MB partition alone and just put the image on the other partition and still got the same result.

Correct me if I am wrong, To begin with you had a GPT installtion on the machine(since UEFI was enabled).Later you disabled UEFI and created an image.Just disabling the UEFI will not convert the existing installation to MBR.The need is to reinstall the OS. Try this, --Disable UEFI and boot the machine using installation media, --Access the command prompt and run the command mentioned below diskpart select disk 0 clean --Exit and proceed with the install

You cannot leave the 100Mb partition as GPT and make the other partition MBR - this is why you are getting legacy boot errors.

EdT - like I mentioned earilier - I have tried it with leaving the 100 MB partition and without. Originally I have removed it, like normally. However when I encountered this error I tested with leaving the partition.

Maneesh - I will try the instructions you have provided and post the results.

    Thanks.

I believe I have already created a new image with UEFI disabled. But I will try it again just to confirm.

I ran the diskpart and this is the error I received:

Clean is not allowed on the disc containing the current boot, system, pagefile, crash dump or hibernation volume.

Did you boot the machine from Installation Media as Maneesh mentioned earlier?  Win 7 and later use WinPE as the boot environment when installing, and you need to boot from either installation media, or from an external flash disk or external hard disk with WinPE boot environment installed. That was you can ensure that the hard disk in the machine is not in use, and can be cleaned.

I just made an image for an HP Elitedesk 800 G1 Ultra-Slim desktop, same process I've always done creating an image and using the new WIN 3.0 package I was given last week by Symantec Support because of the Intel I217 NIC, which worked on a similar model, the Mini Version of this PC by HP, but after image of this model, the Ultra Slim, we are getting "GPT-formatted disk.  Legacy Boot not supported.  Press any key to reboot".

I've tried disabling the UEFI and made sure legacy was on, and also tried to change from AHSI to IDE, because in the past we had issues with HP machines needing that changed to boot correctly.

What could be causing this on this model of PC, but the same line of PC, the Elitedesk 800 G1 Mini, I created image, same process I have always done by deleting all partitions and installing windows 64 bit SP1 and then sysprepped, and loaded image on 18 of those Mini PC's and no issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as we have 90 PC's to install soon and stuck...

    Thanks!

I spoke with Symantec Support and I had to redo image.  I had to go into BIOS, Storage>Boot order> and then disable the UEFI, then save.  Then recreate image.

So far so good on a test image I made after doing this.

Issue I had was I had my image WITH that turned on and it will not deploy to new PC's.  They mentioned it MAY work fine with WIN PE 4.0, but I wasn't going to go through creating a whole new package when they just gave me 3.0 because Ghost Suite is still not updated.

I did the same thing. I disabled the uefi boot in the boot order. Kept hdd on ahci with legacy enabled in the security settings. I don't get that GPT error now . But windows is crashing with blue screen during boot process. Any suggestions? Thank you

In the process now of making another image, I did get a 'Windows failed to start" then all the normal options, safe mode, with networking, Last good config, start normally" and talking to Rep they said that is common, but that image only had the NIC installed and made image as a test.  I am in the process of doing a fully setup image of a PC and then going to try to load on a PC and see what happens.  I told Rep after I clicked on "Start Windows Normally" it never came back up, even after 10+ reboots.

Will keep you posted what I find out.

I did not that when in IDE mode, it would not boot at all, it would keep cycling until I chanegd to AHCI.

    What worked for me:

    -Disabled the UEFI in BIOS
    -Save Changes and Reboot
    -Create Image
-Saved image to our server as a test
    -Loaded image to 2 PC's
-One PC had the UEFI enabled and One PC had it disabled
-Both PC's loaded the image without issue

Looks like the main issue is when CREATING the image, you need to have the UEFI disabled, but when applying image to same model PC after, it doesn't care if that is on or off.

In the process now of making a sysprepped image so then we can add our asset tag numbers to it during the imaging process.

    Hope this helps

    ***CORRECTION***

I had to keep UEFI disabled.  AFter I did a sysprepped image on two PC's with it enabled, both blue screened on me after image loaded when Windows was doing it's processing.

    I did following

    disabled the UEFI from bios.

    saved and reboot

    created the basic test image

    uploaded to symantec ghost server

downloaded to another HDD and tried on same PC through which I had created the Image. now I dont get GPT error, but windows crashes, I have tried all  safe mode options..still crashes.

Only difference I see between what we did is we just upload to a PC that has a external HDD on it that stores images, not a Ghosting Server.  Not sure what else it could be as I had to go into the Symantec SUpport portal and we have maintenance on software so I was called with assistance.
