  • 1.  "Green Dot" slow to appear?

    Posted May 18, 2015 11:54 AM

So it seems like over the past few months the Green Dot on our SEP clients (all RU5, Win7/8.1) is taking much longer to appear after a reboot. It used to be that within 10-30 seconds we would have a dot, now it can take up to 5 minutes.

    • I've cleanwiped the client off and started with a fresh copy as a test, but it really did nothing.
    • I run SymHelp and it did not give me anything I wasn't already aware of.
    • If I right click the shield and manually update the policy, the dot will almost immediately appear (does that point to a setting in the SEPM?)

This is not a huge deal for us as the client will eventually connect, but if there is something obvious I'm missing, or if I should talk with the networking folks about something that they've changed...I'd like to know.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw the question out there.

    Thanks for your time,

    -Mike

I see this as well some times. Seems to be the norm. Serivces unloading/loading and stopping/starting. The green dot always appears so I'm rarely concerned. But have noticed it sometimes.

Ideally it should start along with other startup services, I tested in my lab (RU5) with Windows 7 & 8.1 and it was preety quick. After login i could see green dot less than a minute.

I would suggest to test few more machines, In case if clients are in 'Pull mode' then it might happen.

Normally, it would connect immediately when the PC is rebooted. But, At times I have also noticed that rebooting a server, might take some time to show the green dot. However, opening the client will show as if it is already communicating. So I dint bother much, as it was still communicating. :)

Thank you to everyone who has replied thus far...a few points of clarification.

    1) We are indeed running in pull mode, but I've always assumed that a client checks in immediately after every reboot.

    2) -> Lumia@720 in this instance I'm only talking about workstations, since our servers only get rebooted on patch nights, we don't normally "see" the issue. As far as the workstations go, when there is no green dot the clients typically show "offline" in the troubleshooting menu.

    3) The situation only presents itself if a customer signs in directly after a reboot...as Brian mentioned, maybe the services have not yet completed their tasks before the desktop is ready.

All that said, this is new for us with RU5 as of the past couple of months...prior to that, it was as Chetan mentioned, less than a minute to get a green dot regardless of how quickly after a reboot the customer signed in.

I'll test a few more machines as suggested, and wait patiently for RU6 to see if anything changes. As I previously mentioned, this could be entirely on our end and something our networking folks have added to the mix.

    All the best,

    -Mike
