GRT restore fails almost immediately with "Unable to attach to a resource" error

I'm trying to do a restore from a GRT backup to tape of some Exchange 2003 mailbox contents to a different mailbox on a different exchange server (the original server doesn't exist anymore)

I've set the restore job to re-direct to the new server and to a different mailbox but just after the job mounts the tape it fails with the error:-

Final error: 0xe000848c - Unable to attach to a resource.  Make sure that all selected resources exist and are online, and then try again.
Final error category: Resource Errors

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-33932

I've tried running the job with several different accounts, all of which have mailboxes on the server and aren't hidden but I still get the same error.

The original backup would have been done with BE 10 or 11 and the restore is running under BE12

Anyone got any ideas why it's failing?

Thanks

Bit more information, the original backup wasn't done using GRT, I think it was done using the old BE 10 granular mailbox backup method, I can select the mailbox and/or messages for restore though.

Was it performed using the SNAPSHOT technology. If it is a snapshot backup it cannot be redirected.

Also refer to the following articles.

A restore job to redirect Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Store data to a Recovery Storage Group on an alternate server in the same Administrative Group fails. The final error is "0xe000848c - Unable to attach to a resource. Make sure that all selected resources exist and are online, and then try again."

Hi, no the original backup wasn't a snapshot it was a Backup Exec 10 bricklevel MAPI backup of an Exchange 2003 mailbox database.

We have no problems restoring recent Backup Exec 11 and Backup Exec 12 GRT mailbox item backups

I can see the items for restore and select them but it seems that BE11 can't restore them into an Exchange 2007 server and we don't have any remaining Exchange 2003 servers. So we can't try restoreing to an Exchange 2003 server and we also can't use recovery storeage groups as Exchange 2007 doesn't support mounting Exchange 2003 databases.

I'm hoping that we don't need to build and indefinately maintain an Exchange 2003 server just for the occasional mail item restore, it should be possible for BE 12 to restore old BE10 brick level mailbox item backups into a mailbox on an Exchange 2007 server?

I've done this now by building an Exchange 2003 server, creating an empty mailbox on it, restoring the items into that and then exporting to a .PST using Outlook.

I also logged a support call with Symantec and the official position is that BE 12 can't restore Exchange 2003 brick level backups into Exchange 2007 mailboxes. You have to keep an Exchange 2003 server running for as long as you may need to restore old mail items.

I'm not going to post here what I think about this ...:smileymad:
