This issue has been solved. See solution.

How do I make GRT restores on Hyper-V VMs?

I have all the GRT options ticked under Virtual Machinem, including "Use Backup Exec Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) to enable the restore of individual files and folders from virtual machines"

This is on a BackupExec 3600 appliance.

To perform GRT backups and restores you need to install Remote Agent on the VM.

Refer to BE2012 Agent for Hyper V Best Practices.

Thanks for the feedback. So the server already has the remote agent installed.

"I get the following error after the backup completes:

The job completed successfully.  However, the following conditions were encountered:

Failed to mount one or more virtual disk images. Restores that use Granular Recovery Technology may not be available from this backup set."

Found a solution http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2013544

This is on a BackupExec 3600 appliance too, not quite as "plug and play" as I had hoped...
