GRT restore of VMDK from DDRdrive , BE 2012 SP2

File level GRT restore of VMDK which is stored in DDRdrive, staged and get restored. 

How should I run a backup whether to DISK or TAPE to do a faster restore of VMDK?

Not Sure about the DDRdisk,however if you are restoring from TAPE staging is required when doing a file level restore from the VMDK on a tape.

If you backup to a local disk , USB disk or a network disk no staging is required at the time of restoring the individual files from the VMDK and the data related to the GRT is stored under an IMG folder of a disk based storage.

Since the vmdk image needs to be staged to disk first before a GRT item can be restored it is faster to just restore from a B2D backup. see: Backup Exec 2012 Tuning and Performance Guide

You can desigh your backup strategy as follows:

- Run a GRT backup to disk (this will be a fast backup and will also be helpfull in faster recovery, as you do not need to stage the data when restoring from disk)

- Run a duplicate of the backup set to tape (this will help you to recover the data even after the backup set on disk gets over written)

Now, lets suppose you keep the retention policy for disk based backups for 2 weeks, you can restore any data that you need from disk for a duration of 2 weeks.

If you want to restore any data post 2 weeks of backups, you can simply get the needed tapes (tapes that contain the duplicate backup set) and duplicate the backup set to disk (to avoid staging). Then run the restore from disk.

The duration of time for which you will retain the backup sets on disks will completely depend on the disk space available with you.
