  • 1.  GSS 2.0 Several Bugs - need help!

    Hello all,

Frustrations are mounting here for us using GSS 2.0.  I have been using (Norton) Ghost since version 5.  I have never had so many problems with it until now.

I will try to give background and itemize the issues so hopefully I can receive some good feedback.  We are running GSS 2.0 and WIndows 2003 Server SP1, dual Xeon Dell PE2850 with 2GB RAM, plenty of HD space.

    1)  After an imaging task, the client fails at the Configuration step.  The system returns to DOS and prompts the user to enter GHREBOOT in order to reboot to windows.  After this is entered, the configuration does apparently take hold, but this is not desired!  This process should be automated.  We did not experience this issue in the previous 1.1 GSS.

2)After replacing a failed Motherboard on a Dell system, I went to the console to delete the old machine account.  It will not let me delete the account because it says that the machine is part of a task or report, but this is not the case!  It has been removed from all tasks.  Why can't I delete the machine?  Now I have two machines listed with the same machine name, different MAC Addresses.  I just want to get rid of the bogus account.

3)If computers have been moved from one group to another, and then you attempt to modify a task that was associated with those groups/computers, the system freezes for an instant, and then the Ghost Console Crashes and then exits.

4)Attempts to image multiple machines via multicast on the same subnet have been failing.  The error message is error 10030 - Unable to establish connection with session XXXX.  I am unable to image more than 10 machines at a time, because randomly computers cannot connect to the server.  This was not an issue until upgrading to this version.

5)When creating an imaging task that has a large number of separate configurations, for instance 25 configs/computers, a strange bug occurs where after saving the task then going back into view the settings, multiple configurations are stacked under one computer.  This causes all sorts of problems, primarily mismatched configs and task failures.  I reported this problem years ago, but it has never been fixed.  Please fix this!

6)I had to turn off our firewall to get any ghosting to work at all, because the programs or ports that need to be opened have apparently changed from the last rev.  Can you please either program the installer to configure the Windows Firewall to allow Ghost traffic, or else clearly document exactly what ports/applications need to get through the firewall?  I understand there may already be documentation on this, but I have had a hard time finding any documentation for GSS2.0.

    Please Help!

    Hi there,

It is certainly unusual to get so many problems in one go.
Hopefully I can help with some of them. My comments are below in blue.

Just to eliminate a possibility here, did you also check whether the machine is included in a task in the "Executed Template Tasks" folder? This folder was only introduced in GSS 2.0 so you may have missed it there.

Which firewall are you using on your server machine? The installer should have automatically installed the windows firewall rules for ghostcast server. If it didn't for some reason, you can manually add c:\Program Files\Symantec\Ghost\Ghostsrv.exe to the exceptions list.
    Cheers
