GSS 2.5 - Can you choose folders to skip in an image?

rex_p's picture

Hi, I am using Ghost Suite 2.5 to capture images on 30 Cad Workstations. We allow user's to store music and pictures locally (Keeps that data off of the network), but I forsee these making my images larger than I want. Is there anywhere you can specify in the image creation to skip folders like My Music or My Pictures?

It is possible using -skip but only on FAT

It is possible to skip a file or a folder while taking an image , There is a command line switch
-skip you can use, You can add this command switch in 'Advanced' option when you are taking image from console.

The skip file switch causes Symantec Ghost to exclude the indicated files during a create
or restore operation. A skip entry can specify a single file, a directory, or multiple files
using the * wildcard.
File names must be given in short file name format and all path names
are absolute.
Only FAT system files can be skipped. It is not possible to skip files on NTFS
or other file systems. The skip switch may only be included in the command line once. To
specify multiple skip entries, they must be included in a text file indicated using
-skip=@skipfile. The format of the skip text file, skipfile, matches the format used with the
CRC32 vexcept option.

For example,
-skip=\Progra~1\
Skips the program files directory (note the short file name).

Why just FAT

Yogesh/Symantec,

Why just FAT?  It's pretty much a dead file system.  I believe Microsoft ImageX and .WIM files can exclude files from NTFS volumes (although it's a pain for imaging and restoring an entire HDD).

What is Symantec's plan for adding the ability to exclude files from NTFS partitions and for editing (adding and deleting files) NTFS partitions in a Ghost image.

With our move to Windows 7 I may be in the market for an updated imaging package. This is a feature I've wanted in Ghost for years and expected would be available by now.

Thoughts?
