This is a busy thread, so forgive me if I have overlooked some posts.
The behavior you describe could happen due to SATA drives as well as network driver issues. Best way to isolate the issue is trying a local storage (USB, another partition if you have multiple partitions) or a mapped network share. If you can create (actually just start creating the image) in a local disk, then we can focus on the network driver.
There had been conflicts with IDE controller when using SATA disks in some machines. Could you try Ghost with the switch -noide (you have to use this switch locally with Ghost.exe, not from multicast server).
