GSS2.0 Unable to use Create Image task with Windows Vista Enterprise

  • 1.  GSS2.0 Unable to use Create Image task with Windows Vista Enterprise

    Posted Jun 06, 2007 10:03 AM
    Hello,

    I am currently testing out Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise for our environment and am having some issues with GSS2.0 and certain tasks.

    Currently, I am unable to use the Create Image task from the console to pull an image off a Vista PC.  I am also unable to re-image a PC using a clone task from the console.  These types of tasks will work fine using the Ghost Server and a boot CD however.

    Unfortunately, I am also not getting any error messages either.  The ghost tasks will start, reboot the PC but it will never load the VirtualPartition.  It simply boots back up into Windows.  The task in the console shows that it completed successfully even though it didn't.

    Any one have any ideas?

    That is strange, have you tried doing it using Windows PE first? Are there any log files in the %Program Files%\Symantec\Ghost folder that might help pin point what went wrong?

    Since I have this working in my site....

    Hi Dustin,

    GSS 2.0 supports these operations on Vista clients, it is strange why you don't get any error message.

    Could you right clieck the task and see what is in 'Task Scenario'? And could you go to view->task log and double click on the task and see what details are given for each step of the task?

    Unfortunately, I don't receive any errors.  The Ghost Console thinks that the task finished successfully.  For some reason, it won't boot into the Dos partition.

    I have looked at the log files and am unable to determine where the error is.

    Could you right-click the task and select Task Scenario and let me know what it has?

    Usually, when you double click on the task log, it should show you several steps. Do you get any such steps in the task log when you double click it?

    When uploading an image, here are the following steps it takes and the status.

    Update DOS system files = Success
    Update DOS Network Drivers = Success
    To Virtual Partition = Success
    Clone = Success
    To target operating system = Success
    Finish = Success

    The problem is that the image is never created.  This whole process only takes about 1 minute to complete instead of 15-20 like it normally does.

    Double-Clicking on any of the above listed tasks does not reveal any additional information.

    Yes, you won't get any additional information if Console thinks that the task is successful.

    Could you look at the task scenario and Post it? Once you have the task scenario window open, select all and press Ctrl+C to copy it. That will help us to see what could be wrong.

    Thanks for the details, everything looks OK in the task. I believe that drive F: is a local drive in the same machine.

    It is very difficult to think what's going on, it almost looks like Console is really confused about the machine. Though it is not the exact behviour, only similar thing I can think of is the issue in 2.0 if there are multiple machines with the same UUID. Under this situation, you get a single machine in Console for multiple clients and used to get confused. This had been fixed and a live update is available now.

    Does this only happen to this particular machine? Could you create images successfully for other machines (with Vista or any other OSs)? How many machines do you have in the Console?

    I currently only have 2 clients in the console so I highly doubt that is the case.  I did, however, attempt to use Live Update and it is failing.  I have re-installed Live Update yet it doesn't work.

    As for uploading images for other machines, I haven't tried that yet.

    It looks like I'll have to uninstall and re-install the ghost server to get this to work.

    This update downloads the install files to desktop and you have to upgrade manually. At which point it did fail?

    Yes, if you have only two machines it is unlikely this is the problem. One possibility is an incomplete installation, which could be the reason for update failure too.

    Next step is looking at the log files and see what is going on, but if you are planning to re-install the server, we can try it first.
