Ghost32 and Ghostoem32 11.5.0.2165's problem.

1.  Created image like below with Ghost32.exe -split=700 -noauto with b.11.5.0.2165.

CDR00001.GHO

CDR00002.GHS

CDR00003.GHS

CDR00004.GHS

CDR00005.GHS

2.  Using Nero burning software,  I made an image file set of DVD like below.

Disc1

CDR00001.GHO

CDR00002.GHS

Disc2

CDR00003.GHS

CDR00004.GHS

CDR00005.GHS

3.  Booting from Win PE disc created by Boot Wizard and run Ghostoem32.exe ( 11.5.0.2165 ).

4.  It started well at the 1st disc.  But just after replaced with 2nd disc, error appeared.

"Invalid order of Span(497).  [OK]"

5.  If open the Browser, CDR00003.GHS is pointed out in the file list but CDR00004.GHS is in the file name box.

6.  Then if ok is clicked, it returns error.

Image File Selection Error (1909)

D:\CDR00004.GHS is not a Symantec Ghost file.  Or is not the correct span segment.  Thask can not be completed.   [OK]

7.  If I click CDR00003.GHS in the list, it starts reading file to continue the restore.

#  This problem does not happen if in build 11.5.0.2141 Ghost32.exe.  Let me know how to create recovery discs like user no need to open the [Browse] button until restore completes.

Try changeing your image name to being 5 alpha characters long

I am not sure if you are having a problem that is a documented bug but try to create your image with a 5 alpha character name like image.gho  this will allow the next segment to be seen correctly I can’t find the KB that I had read now but it mentioned a bug like this.

Also how are you creating your image? Are you ghost casting or saving it directly to a usb hard drive.  The names listed would indicate that these are burned directly to cd using the ghost32.exe but if this is the case then you can only restore from the original CD’s not from a cd built with a third party burning software.  Nero is my favorite and should be fine once the 5 alpha name is used.

Try the 5 alpha characters and post back maybe someone else has some thoughts also.

CD spanning

When is Symantec going resolve the CD spanning issue?

No suggestion given by Symentic to-date has worked.  Since upgrading to GSS 2.5 and installing the 3 suggested updates to 11.5.0.2165 Ghost has been virtually useless.

What good is the product if it won't perform as advertised?

Had you tried the image name that worked for us.

Had you tried the image name suggestion?  That had worked for us. We did create our images with build 2165 and restored with 2165.   I agree that symantec needs to fix this so you can use any name you darn well please.

Cheers.

I'm having the same exact

I'm having the same exact issue, except for the first image I have shows in the browser as if it does not associate correctly. The icon next to the file name is like a text file. I will attempt to adjust my filename as it is more than eight characters long, and post back. I tried one image at 7 characters and another at eight characters and was able to restore without problems. The image with 8 characters has a second file, which naturally was edited by ghost automatically to put 001 on the end, making it 11 characters. I'm starting to think that maybe the image is corrupt.

Still getting Image File Selection Error 1909

I tried cutting down the name on the image files, but still getting same error message.

I'm going to try renaming the ISO down to 8 characters, using both the long and short file names of the image. I'll post back the results.

Could it be the image is corrupt?

Anybody have any suggestions?

can you put the image files on a drive and restore them locally

you can test using the same image using ghost cast or from an external hard drive.  If the image won't install using these options then it may be bad and if it is a bad image it won't matter if it is on cd or not it is bad.

have you seen this yet?

hope that helps.

Excellent post!! I

Excellent post!! I particularly noticed the part that says:  "When adding the image files using the ghost boot wizard the total data including the ghost boot files must be less than 4 gigs on disk 1."

I will make another disk with only the first image file on it and post the results when finished.

Thanks ICHCB

Success!!

Made another bootable DVD with only the first image file on it (of course I'm using the same image files as the previous failure) and the device booted, was able to select the image file and it started to image. I did put in the second DVD with the remaining image files and the device completed the entire image process.

Thanks again for assisting me.

Still have to browse to the next DVD

Almost forgot to mention, but it doesn't matter if your image filename is 5 characters or more. I still had to browse to the next image file. I believe limiting the filename to 5 characters would allow ghost to read the file in the DOS 8.3 file structure. Again, this had no effect as I still had to browse to the next DVD.

Same issue...

So, there is still no fix to address the problem of having to browse to the next piece of the spanned image??

I have followed all the advice found on the various forum posts that talk about this problem (5 character name, live updates), and it seems like everyone is just accepting the fact that user intervention has to occur.  Just seems odd that this worked fine in previous versions, and has broken with 11.5.

Any updates or advice is appreciated...
