This issue has been solved. See solution.

I am currently setting up a server to monitor my server fleet.  Checking for things like is the server pingable, drive space low warnings, and are specific services running.

Is there anything I can monitor for on a GUP to ensure it is still functioning?   I dont see a service but thought there might be something I could key off of.

I am using Servers Alive for this if that helps anyone with any suggestions.

What is the version of SEP

What is the version of SEP you are using?

The machine that is designated as the GUP will create a directory if it doesn’t already exists at the following location:
C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\SharedUpdates
This SharedUpdates folder will cache all proxied files. For the first round of implementation this will only be managed LU content. No other communication or content will be proxied. Getting index files and profiles, posting state and logs, etc. will be done directly with server.

If you are using SEP RU5  then you can for sure monitor the GUP ,. With RU5 the GUP sends  information to SEPM.

•         SEPM maintains a table in which information about all the GUPs is stored
•         GUP list contains entries from every GUP from all the policies
•         SEPM keeps checking for new GUP information in a timely manner
•         By default SEPM always keep looking for new changes in GUP list every 1 minute
•         GUP List is stored at the location:
•         C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\data\outbox\agent\gup
•         There is a file called as Globallist.xml that contains the digitally signed hash value of the gup List
