A Group Update Provider is a client computer that you designate to locally distribute content updates to clients. A Group Update Provider downloads content updates from the management server and distributes the updates to clients.

Group Update Provider not provide the policies, clients are getting the policy from Manager.

Thanks.

will it possible that clients are only communicate with gup not to manager even it required the defintion or policies.

Rafeeq's picture

No.

They have to communicate with the manager so that they can know who the GUP is.

and also GUP can take update only from manager.

You can check this on the client by enabling sylink

 <GetGupList:>http://10.199.11.27:8014/secars/secars.dll?h=6FED64E075259984D18777EC722FE0A622A081A377B4642684BBC636302A7239E7825C0
04/08 10:51:04 [456] <GetGupList:>SMS return=200
04/08 10:51:04 [456] <ParseHTTPStatusCode:>200=>200 OK

The client is requesting the sepm on 8014 for gup information. There wont be any cached info of gup on the client, whenever heartbeat happens it looks for these info.

As per official documentation:

Group Update Provider Overview
The Group Update Provider was a feature request to support designating a particular client to serve as a computer that will get content updates and publish them. This is designed to provide functionality vaguely similar to configuring a legacy Symantec AntiVirus client as a secondary server.
The computer that is downloading and publishing the content is referred to as the “Group Update Provider.” The computers in the client group will use the designated “Group Update Provider” as a local proxy for content updates.

...GUP is able to provide only content updates = definitions to the clients, nothing else. Client will get the policies from SEPM, as well the information about the available definition updates will come form SEPM as well.
