  • 1.  hardware needed to run cms?

    Posted Mar 24, 2010 06:04 AM

I have installed the CMS trial on an pretty lowend (amd64 cpu / 1gb ram) desktop just to try the software, and its running pretty slow, I didnt expect it to be speedy :)

The NS has a requirement of a p3 800 or something, but that seems a bit low...

I will most probably run the SQL Server on the same box as the CMS.
Can anyone give a guestimate on what hardware I need to handle 1600 clients?

    Sincerely

I have attached the Altiris Planning and Implementation Guide which should give you all the information you need.

BTW, there should be a new version of this guide coming out soon.

Are you looking for CMS to be a supplement to an existing process (WSUS for patching, SCCM)? Do you intend to image and provision systems? Is your intention to use SQL Express or SQL Standard?

    Thanks for quick answers!
I will study the Altiris 7 Planning & Implementation Guide and after that I hopefully can ask better and more educated questions :)

jharings: SQL Standard, the process today is very much non existen, so hopefully we can use CMS for "everything" (patch, software management, deploy etc)

Right now I'd suggest you use a quad-core system with 8GB of RAM.  If SQL is on the same box, make it two quad-cores.  You can only use 4GB of that RAM now, but support is coming later this year for 64-bit host OS, so you'll be able to take advantage of all of it soon enough.

Performance will be increased in your environment by using a site server to reduce load on the NS, or moving SQL off-box, or both.  How many sites do you have?
