Hi,

not really a backup exec question....

I was wondering if it's safe to remove/connect an external scsi tape drive when the server is powered on?

I've done it in the past and it hasn't crashed the server - I just wondered if I'm setting myself up for a fall!

You can, shouldn't be a

You can, shouldn't be a problem if it's hot-swappable. Check to see what the documentation says on your SCSI card, and if it's supported. I'd suggest manually deleting it from Device Manager if it's not going to be used again.
You'd probably have to shut your server down when you add a new device though, otherwise the SCSI ID won't auto-detect correctly.

If you find this is a solution, please mark it as such.

Officially, it probably isn't

Officially, it probably isn't supported or encouraged by the hardware vendors.  But I have done it a lot and never knowingly blew anything up.

Sometimes doing a re-scan in Windows device manager will find the tape hardware, but sometimes you do have to do a reboot to force the HBA to find the device.

You definitely will need to stop & restart BE services when changing hardware.
