Help with Asset Import from .xls

Im wondering if anyone is having the same problem I am with importing an .xls spreadsheet into asset management in Altiris.

The quick version is:
Simply defining the data source as an excel spreadsheet, pointing to the spreadsheet and clicking on display data.
The spreadsheet comes up however some of the fields aren't showing up and when I finally do an import the don't come in, no errors, just like they were skipped. The field is a version field. some data looks like '4.1' or '4.1.1' or '4.1 sp3' any number with only numbers and one decimal shows up.
Anything with more than one or letters does not show up.
I have completely cut and pasted only the data to a new spreadsheet, and get the same result.
If I save it as a CSV and make a CSV data source and display that data it works and its displayed and imported correctly.
It only seems to be a problem on the .xls and only with numbers and letters or more than one decimal.
When I display the data, under the column header it lists the data type it sees coming from the spreadsheet. On the columns that don't work the type is defined as (Double) on the ones that work it says (String). When I do a csv version, it says (String) under the columns and they do appear and import successfully.

Has anyone experienced this?

Any insight is most appreciated.
