Help with Imaging Netbooks using USB
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 6 comments
Hi
I have many Asus EEEpc netbooks to image. These Netbooks do not have CD drives so I would have to boot from USB. I would also need to have the image on USB source. I have external USB harddisk that i could use.
I would need to image these as 'standalone' because if i ghost through console / Ghostcast then it will flood the network and kill all the wireless users.
Ideally I would like to capture the image onto a USB harddrive and if i need to re-image the machine then i can do it very easily and quickly in a standalone mode.
Please advise as to best way to do this in idiot mode as i am not very experienced in this. I am open to any other suggestions
Thank you.

Hi,
You can create standard ghost boot disk boot package either of pc-dos or winpe pre-os through Ghost boot wizard. Please select USB drive to store the boot package while creating it. Boot your laptop with USB drive and you can select USB hard drive to create image and restore image operation. I hope this answered your query.

Hello Clapso. Do you have the
Hello Clapso.
Do you have the newest version of Ghost Solution Suite?
USB-Support and Boot Capability enabled in BIOS?
If this is the case, go to the boot wizard, choose pc-dos as preOS, standard Ghost boot package, enable usb-support, click next, next, choose USB-Drive (your HDD or USB-Stick to boot from), click next, next, finish.
This should do the trick.
Important: The USB-Device counts as local device (information under system-administration). You need to know the right number for the Cloning-progress. Please tell me, if this works for you.

Hi Alexander
I have GSS 2.5.
A dumb question...if i select the USB drive (ext HDD) as boot device will it format the whole drive? It is 250 GB drive with lot of data. Would this drive be 'wasted' or can I store multiple images and anything else as well as use it as a boot device?
I will be trying out your suggestion at the weekend.
Thank you

Hi calapso.
Unfortuanetly yes. But you can make a boot image on an USB-Stick and save the images (cloning) on an external Hard-disk-drive.
On the USB-stick, you can define the boot sequence, and on the hard-disk-drive you can store the images.
This would be my step.

on the USB boot disks you can backup your data, make it a boot disk and put the data back. as long as you dont mess with the bootable files you can still use your USB drive for regular use. i just impulse bought a $3 1gb usb drive in the checkout line of a grocery store and use it only for ghosting (though not very often). also dont forget PXE, you can net boot a netbook and ghost it over the wired network just like any other PC.
