Symantec Management Platform (Notification Server)

I am trying to install Dell Client Manager 3.0 - which requires Notification Server 7 - the install went almost to completion yesterday - before it failed. I mistakely tried to manually remove everything so I could try it again. Now, when I try to install just the Notification Server - I get:

Altiris Notification Server failed to check the system pre requirements.
NS 5.5 must be uninstalled before 6.0 installation can be continued.

Same problem if I try to install version 6.0. I have spent countless hours searching through the registry trying to remove everything I can find revelant. I never had NS 5.5 installed - I only had 7.0 installed yesterday (for the first time) - and then I manually removed it. Can you think where else I can look. It's driving me up the wall. Altriis wants $400 for a single support call. - I could see $150, but $400?!

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

The Dell Forums have quite a few topics on this. NS7 by itself is in beta, and there isn't too much information available about the Dell piece. Have you checked the prereqs? What version of server, and SQL server are you using? What version of .net? Is IIS installed?

Yes, all of the prereqs are met - it checks that during the full install. I have the same problem trying to install NS6 (that error). I am trying to install to SQL 2005 Express - but it never get's close to that - the error pops up immediately. no problems with .net, & yes, IIS is installed. As I mentioned - it almost completely installed yesterday (except for an error at the end). So I know that it should atleast install that far. My problem now, is that it thinks - for some reason - that 5.5 is installed - I am guess that the error is not really relevant - other then it sees something from the install yesterday - but what is the question. Trust me - I have looked everywhere and removed 100's of Altiris settings from te registry - but the install pops back instantly with the error!

What version of server? Again, the Dell forums may have more advice, but we can try and help you. FYI, this is a user supported board, so please keep that in mind.

To be honest - the Dell forums have very little on this - Dell only, kind of, supports the 'Client Manager' - which works in conjuction with the Altiris products. I get theis error independently of the Dell product - just when I try to install Notification Server by itself.

Server is running Windows Server 2003...

Are you trying to install the Dell Client Manager along with any of the other NS7 beta products? The Dell Cleint Manager build and the current NS build are on diffferent versions of NS Core and won't install correctly. Make sure you are installing correctly trough the download of DCM

There is a Dell Management Console 'beta' which is geared entirely towards the new console, but yes you are right navigating around the regular Dell Forums is like walking through a minefield (@ midnight, while blindfolded). I did find this http://www.dell.com/content/to...c=us&cs=555&l=en&s=biz,

It does sound like a buggy installer, which was an issue with Altiris when 6.0 was first released. I usually advocate installing NS by itself, and then adding the solutions. I don't believe that is an option with 7.

When you download the DCM - it comes with Symantec Installation Manager - from which you can install the DCM (and the NS7). If I install through the Symantec Installation Manager - or if I go into the Altiris Components directory and run altiris_ns_7_0_x86.msi - I get the same error. I did try to download NS6 (altiris_ns_6_0.exe) and run it - same thing - it pops right back with the NS 5.5 error My only though would be to try to find a NS 5.5 install - install it and then correctly uninstall it - but I cannot find it.

Thanks for the Dell link - but I have seen all that - right now I am just trying to install NS7 (or any version at this point) - once I can mnage that, I can correctly try to uninstall and install DCM (& NS7) through the Symantec INstallation Manager...

Try firing up RegMon or FileMon while starting the install; maybe you can catch whatever registry entry or file it is picking up that makes it think you have NS 5.5 installed...?

I know one of the first run through I had with the NS7 beta, that the installer was insistent that I did not have an internet connection, when I did. So, hopefully the tools Kyle mentioned will help track something down.

Thanks to everyone - using procmon I was able to find what was causing the hangup in the install - it was this registry key:

HKCR\Installer\UpgradeCodes\BD07D9FBBCB1C4A4394A9F46F2FACC2D

Would have never figured that out - as there was nothing to reference it to Altiris.
